Comment They just don't care (Score 1) 105

For now the Russian government is just a big oil/gas corporation. Sometimes they do some populist stuff, but that's basically all. All they care is their profit, anything else is being viewed from that POV. Why should they care about IT independence or something as complex as that? If they want to please a crowd, they'd better purchase an expensive soccer coach from abroad, or start talking about future space programs. OS development is not something that common folks understand, it's not something that gives them a profit right now (since they don't care about tomorrow either). So why bother?

Don't think I'm bashing the country. I'm Russian, living in Russia. This is just my take on the situation.

This is just outright stupid. Google brings customers to your site and you expect them to pay up?

A lot of companies pay up to 60% of sales to those who brought customers and made a sale.

Those news agencies are just idiots who have no idea how online business works. "Catch-22", my ass... Don't link how the Web business works? Get out and sale your newspapers through the boys on the street.

As the poster above mentions, I don't know why people use that crap. H.264 with AAC seems to be the correct path for the future and is what most people are using these days.

People use "that crap" because they want their customers, for example, be able to watch movies without installing some additional codecs. Yes, H.264 is far superior, but most customers of adult sites, for example, have problems with installing codecs. Or they are afraid of installing anything (and they have a right to be afraid). It's always better to play safe and use the ones, installed with OS by default.

First, in Russia, just like in any other country, all new computers from large vendors and all notebooks come with preinstalled Windows. Russian version of Windows, licensed and all...

Next, I manage several servers and see a lot of spam, coming from owned PCs. There are quite a few that are located in Russia. The biggest share of obvious bots comes from the Southern America. But US and Europe have a share of this too.

This article is nothing but anti-Russian FUD. Like Russian government could handle the situation but it doesn't... The thing is - at this level they simply couldn't. Cops who work in "computer crime" departments are simply incompetent, there are quite a few of them and those departments have a very small budget, so the "department" of the whole administrative region is just 1 officer + 1 PC, that's all. There are problems with "real" crime - you know, when people get killed. There is a corruption. 37.000 dead in car accidents every year, 35.000 dead from counterfeit vodka every year... Do you think Russian government should concentrate all efforts on "cybercrime" in order to please other countries? Russian government concentrates on fighting those crimes that disturbs their citizens the most - and they are not that effective even at that. So how could you expect them to act effectively on something that simply doesn't bother common folks?

It doesn't matter how it affects their product - they, for whatever reason, are refusing to do business with you and guess what they are entitled refuse it. This does not give you a right to go in and steal their product. Let me give you an example. So how about you get over it.

Having an idiotic sales policy doesn't give you a right to complain about lost sales to government either. You can choose any sales policy you like - but when it fails the reality check, it's up to you to face consequences instead of complaining that the world doesn't suit your personal needs and doesn't work like you'd like it to.
