Submission + - Breakthrough in development of bio-batteries (gizmag.com)

cylonlover writes: The development of practical microbial fuel cells took a big step forward this week. Research conducted by a team of scientists from England's University of East Anglia was published on Monday (May 23), in which they revealed that they had discovered "the exact molecular structure of the proteins which enable bacterial cells to transfer electrical charge." Scientists possessing this knowledge can now start working on technology for tethering bacteria directly to electrodes, which could lead to much more efficient microbial fuel cells — also known as bio-batteries.

Submission + - 8000 credit card details unleashed in bank breach (scmagazine.com.au)

mask.of.sanity writes: Australia's largest bank, the Commonwealth Bank, has cancelled 8,000 credit cards after it detected a data breach at a merchant.
Mastercard and Visa may issue penalties including fines to the acquiring bank under the payment industry’s PCI-DSS compliance rules.
News of breaches is uncommon in Australia because the nation does not have data breach disclosure laws.

Submission + - Amazon Challenges Apple With Mac App Store (computerworld.com) 1

CWmike writes: "Amazon launched a Mac-specific application download store on Thursday that will compete with Apple's nearly five-month-old Mac App Store. The new subsection of Amazon's massive online store, dubbed 'Mac Software Downloads,' kicked off quietly Thursday. Amazon has long offered software downloads for both Windows and Mac customers, but this was the first time that the company called out its Mac-centric 'store.' The retailer, however, apparently did not want to goad Apple into another legal battle by mimicking its rival's 'App Store' moniker: The two companies are already in court over Amazon's 'Appstore for Android,' which Apple claims violates its trademark. Unlike the Mac App Store, which Apple opened in early January, Amazon's includes the popular Office for Mac line from Microsoft."

Submission + - The Universe's 'missing mass' - found by undergrad (monash.edu.au)

brindafella writes: "Filaments attached to superclusters seems an obvious place to look for the 'missing' matter in the universe — now! An undergrad at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, working on a six-week paid astrophysics research internship over the holidays, has found what has eluded astrophysicists. A search through X-ray and 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey data showed Amelia Fraser-McKelvie that there was a significant mass of baryons (fundamental components of atoms) in the galactic filaments. The peer-reviewed paper has been published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society."

Comment follow the money (Score 1) 2288

the problem has always been that it would cost too much to change -- all the tooling (i.e. steel dies, taps, etc) would have to be changed. It would also make it more costly to replace components. Instead of just buying a 9/16" socket head cap screw for $2.00 it would mean re-tapping the hole for 14mm for $45

Where it's free and painless it has already been done, e.g. soft drinks come in liters
