Why does he have to work in south florida? Can't he work anywhere? He's writing software, not painting houses.

That's lost on me too. Why is it necessary for me to turn up 9-5? IAJD looking for work on evenings and weekends to supplement the day job, but on online dev project auctions I seem to be underbid by kids on $2/hour who can finish huge projects in next to no time.

I suspect without employers developing a mindset change my only alternative is to start my own business. Seems a bit extreme though.

Submission + - Shock resignation of David Davis, MP. (bbc.co.uk)

cs02rm0 writes: We heard earlier about the 42 day detention policy approved in the House of Commons (UK). Today, Conservative MP David Davis has resigned to trigger a by-election in his constituency. He intends to fight it, without using the support of the Conservative party, on this issue. The Liberal Democrats have agreed not to field a candidate against him. Frankly, I think that's about as stoic as it gets in UK politics. The Labour party surely has its days numbered.

Youngsters Skip DVR Ads Less Than Seniors 460

Dekortage writes "Analyzing DVR viewing research, Ad Age has noted something unexpected: older DVR users are more likely to skip ads than younger DVR users. The skew is particularly apparent among men: 50% of seniors skipping all the ads, but only 20% of teens do so. Women of any age group tend to be around 35%. Ad Age hypothesizes that younger viewers 'just pay attention to other media when the ads are on TV or, worse yet, perhaps the TV is just 'background music'... I always thought that ad skipping was a major benefit of DVRs. Do you skip all the ads?"

Submission + - Thinking about Rails? Think again (wolfeon.com)

wolfeon writes: "In 2005, Derek Sivers of CD Baby wanted to scrap his site and perform a rewrite in Rails. He hired Jeremy Kemper, also known as bitsweat on Freenode, to help on the project. Two years later, through blood and sweat, the project was then canceled because of limitations of Rails. Rails just wasn't meant to do everything since it is very much "canned" project. Mr. Sivers has written an entry in the O'Reilly blog: 7 reasons I switched back to PHP

This is a fine example of how going for new technology can mean disaster.Anybody who decides to perform a rewrite of any project should invest time to make sure the project will not be scraped... two years later."

Steve Jobs Personally Resolves Customer Complaint 341

An anonymous reader writes "The Consumerist recently published a story about an Apple customer who went through support hell with a broken Macbook. After escalating the issue up the support chain, and a month wait for his Macbook, the guy gave up and simply wrote Steve Jobs a blistering flame-mail. So, was he surprised when Jobs' executive assistant responded back the next day! He got both a brand new Macbook, as well as his old one to copy the hard drive. The guy also responded in a comment, and he turns out to be a slashdotter! He even wrote a journal entry here about the story."
Censorship

Censoring a Number 1046

Rudd-O writes "Months after successful discovery of the HD-DVD processing key, an unprecedented campaign of censorship, in the form of DMCA takedown notices by the MPAA, has hit the Net. For example Spooky Action at a Distance was killed. More disturbingly, my story got Dugg twice, with the second wave hitting 15,500 votes, and today I found out it had simply disappeared from Digg. How long until the long arm of the MPAA gets to my own site (run in Ecuador) and the rest of them holding the processing key? How long will we let rampant censorship go on, in the name of economic interest?" How long before the magic 16-hex-pairs number shows up in a comment here?
