njkid1 writes: "Nintendo's DS handheld has taken the industry by storm; that's no secret. In Japan the Nintendo portable has been out-shipping Sony's PSP on a nearly three-to-one basis. Moreover, in 2006 the DS almost single handedly elevated the Japanese video game market out of its previous doldrums. On this side of the Pacific, not only is the DS consistently outselling the PSP, but it often outsells all consoles. An anonymous reader writes: XBox Live! has reportedly been hacked. According to one source, "... there is a group online called "Infamous Clan" brazenly offering to "jack" Xbox Live accounts and boasting about successful account theft. ..." MicroSoft's response? "... I just got off the phone with a Microsoft Tech for Xbox live that has confirmed this to with me and they have stated that accounts are being stolen and that "Hackers have control of Xbox live and there is nothing we can do about it."

ATAMAH writes: isoHunt (www.isohunt.com) has been shut down without notice, following a lawsuit from MPAA. Currently the message displayed on the website reads: "Jan. 16, 2007 Lawyers from our primary ISP decided to pull our plug without any advance notice, as of 14:45 PST. No doubt about our lawsuit brought by the MPAA. We will be back in operation once we sort out this mess with our ISP, or we get new hardware ready from another ISP (already working on that). Sit back and enjoy the rest of the internet in the mean time. While it last. — The isoHunt crew"

Boy Scouts Introduce Merit Badge For Not Pirating 731

The_Slaughter writes "The MPAA has recruited the boy scouts of America to do their dirty work. Scouts will now be able to learn a merit badge for anti-piracy related activities, including creating public service announcements urging others not to steal movies or music. No word yet on if that includes helping the MPAA file lawsuits against 80-year-old grandmothers."

McAfee Blames Open Source for Botnets 223

'We're not taking aim at the open-source movement; we're talking about the full-disclosure model and how that effectively serves malware development,' the spokesman for McAfee says. Why not just blame the IRC Protocol? Or simply admit that Proprietary vendors cannot keep pace with the Open Source Model?"

Noam Eppel writes to share a recent editorial regarding the current state of information security. From the article: "It is time to admit what many security professional already know: We as security professional are drastically failing ourselves, our community and the people we are meant to protect. Too many of our security layers of defense are broken. Security professionals are enjoying a surge in business and growing salaries and that is why we tolerate the dismal situation we are facing. Yet it is our mandate, first and foremost, to protect."

I just read some of the responses to a very well written book review on Efficient Java. Sigh, so many Java bashers around these days, it reminds me of the old C vs. C++ language wars, I.e. structured vs. OO programming. How I laugh at the arguments!
