Submission + - Can the Internet save Nikola Tesla's only remaining lab? (facebook.com)

GuNgA-DiN writes: "The Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe just posted a plea for help on their Facebook page:

"We need to raise the money to buy Wardenclyffe quickly. Looking for a substantial grant or donation to make this possible. Does anyone have some good connections to possible funding sources?"

A single donation from someone like Sergey Brin or Mark Zuckerberg could save this place for future generations. The foundation is looking to raise $850k to buy the property from AGFA. They have arranged for a matching grant from NY State. And, they are a 501 (c) 3 not for profit so all donations are tax deductible. Can the Internet save Nikola Tesla's only remaining lab?

Submission + - New Google service lets users zoom through years of time-lapse satellite photos (gizmag.com)

cylonlover writes: A combined effort between researchers at the Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Google provides users with easy access to 13 years of NASA Landsat imagery of the Earth’s surface. Although access to the Landsat program’s Earth imagery has been available to the public since 2008, the process of acquiring it has been difficult and cumbersome, due to the sheer volume of data involved. The new capability within Google Earth Engine lets users zoom in and out on any spot on the globe, moving back and forth in time between 1999 and 2011.

in the video, with its predictable post-rock sounding uplifting score (I called it before even clicking the link), Neil Tyson asks of me: how much would [I] pay to "launch our economy?"

um, I'm sorry, pal, but I don't think that's how "the economy" works.

With Kansas stating that 'evolution could not rule out a supernatural or theistic source, that evolution itself was not fact but only a theory and one in crisis, and that Intelligent Design must be considered a viable alternative to evolution,' and North Carolina's legislature circulating a bill telling people to ignore climate science, maybe it's time we start listening to experts who have a proven record of success, rather than ideology that has only been 'proven' in the mind of elected politicians.

or maybe it's time to get the government out of education?

yeah? I have a really easy rebuttal to your "rebuttal:" FUCK YOU.

Wouldn't you want the same policies applied to politicians to prevent them from developing relationships with that one nice guy who just so happens to be a lobbyist for a major kitten-puppy-bunny murder conglomerate?

no. stay the FUCK out of my life.

Not only would his veto have done nothing, it would have also opened the door to attack ads about how he vetoed healthcare for wounded veterans, since that's also in the bill.

um, ok? the absurdity of this is just mind-boggling. so what you're suggesting is you support someone being in power for no other reason than their desire to be in power, while they do things antithetical to the health of the nation? please, cry me a river because your re-election campaign is ruined.

I'm sure you'll do an about face during your second term, right? why would I ever doubt you, dear leader?

you people are absolutely fucking perverted. you are nothing but an indoctrinated, state-worshipping lemming. I'm not even kidding. do some introspection and save yourself from this mind-numbing filth. you are actually coming out and saying that The President of the United States America has no obligation to do anything to better the circumstances of the nation he is representing, so long as whatever he may do is in discord with his ability to retain office.

I'm pretty sure that "falling on his sword to keep you happy," whatever that even means, is exactly what he should do. I think you have it backward. I don't give a fuck about being kept happy--that's your bag, because all this is to you is a popularity contest. it's partisan nonsense, and has no relevance to logic or truth. he should fall on his sword because he's damn near treasonous, shitting on the United States Constitution without abandon. I won't mind if you go down with him; it will happen eventually. it always does.

Firefox will use more memory if the overall amount of memory you have is higher. it's proportional, as it ought to be. I doubt you have 32BG of memory. I have 8GB here, and currently have 230 tabs open, and Firefox is using ~2.4GB. as someone else mentioned, add-ons play a huge role in this as well. I've had Firebug disabled the majority of the time for this reason.

uh, what? my Firefox is using 2.4GB right now. and I love when these discussions start and some haughty POWER USER NERD feels it necessary to point out the fact that he has a whopping 10-20 tabs open. really? I have 230 open right now, and I just cleaned out about a hundred or so recently. what are you talking about?
