Comment Do they get benefits and stuff? (Score 1, Insightful) 94

I bet by next week California will decalare that these people are actually employees of the marketing companies providing the payment, and as such they should be making minimum wage and get free health insurance and avocados and whatever else California does. And then the week after they'll be fined for the pollution generated by running so many cell phones.

They must've never worked with NASA before... Anyway the only cargo vehicle that returns to earth is the Dragon and the last one of those to come back was in December, and that was after the possible abandonment scare from the October Proton failure. Plus these sound pretty big so I wouldn't be surprised if they get bumped a couple times to make room for higher-priority items. Somebody mentioned the uncrewed Dragon demo, but if it's not designed for cargo then it can't take it. It wouldn't have the right restraints and SpaceX may not be able to do the CoG estimates that they need. Also the Soyuz has a little bit of space for cargo, but it's usually Russian priority cargo, so I doubt these old servers will make the cut. They'll get them when they get them.

What besides the bearings would wear out? If the blades are composite, they're not going to rust. The towers may be painted steel, but whoever owns them isn't going to let them rust through and fall over. And the line about the cost of labor for stripping copper wire -- they have machines to do that.

I don't think they have a cargo vehicle. Boeing is working on the CST but that's for people and will only hold a little bit of cargo. Sierra Nevada didn't get approval to use the Dreamchaser for people, so they decided to rejigger it for cargo. The shape of it looks like it will make it a PITA to unload though.
