Who is paying for all this and why? Out of the goodness of their hearts? Maybe I'm just too cynical.

Back in 2003, you had to disconnect a pc from the Internet before installing Windows, else it would be hijacked by hackers before you could finish installing updates..
Fast forward to to 2020.....
Sorry, but do you have a citation for this? As far as I know, all music 'download' copyright suits center around file sharing networks, where you are participating in sending the data to other users while downloading.
I completely agree that Lootboxes are a bad thing, and will not shed a tear to see them gone,, but a question for lawmakers, how is this any different from card trading games, dating all the way back to baseball cards?
I would think simply allowing only 1 concurrent session, (or only 1 concurrent ip with up to x number of simultaneous devices.) would be way better than any of these proposals.
In any case, worrying about this at a time when the proliferation of 'exclusive' content has returned piracy to the top of the value chain is kind of like re-arranging the chairs on the titanic.
Good thing thing this flaw doesn't affect them then.
This needs a sudo user who can run as *any* user other than root, (so not privileged, or wasn't, until this flaw was found.)
The only example I can think of is someone who runs tech support on systems with multiple users, who has to execute commands as the user they are trying to assist...something like virtual machine hosts for cloud vm's? (linode, hostgator, etc.)
Do you *really* think apple will be certifying and training circuit board repair? They don't even do that for their own shops. These "parts" are going to be new motherboards (or equivalent.) that cost almost as much as the device, will have no means of data recovery that independent shops currently do, and will be nothing more than ammunition for Apple to prosecute 'unlicensed' people who are actually repairing apple devices. I'll eat my words of the guides actually include schematics.
How is forcing WP update even possible,, WP has a built in Back-Door??
This is a much bigger security concern than stale software packages!
One of the things I dislike about Slashdot is you can't fix it when you fail reading comprehension this hard. Sorry.
The LKML Post here: https://lkml.org/lkml/2019/8/4...
It doesn't say anything about disabling swap.
I know well the problem that is being described here, and did much testing to find a solution that works well (with current kernels, not hacking the kernel code itsefl)
Increase the
The system will the be able to swap cleanly under memory pressure without the stalling.0
Even on modern fast hardware, power shell takes seconds before it actually starts up. I know, I know, what's a few seconds.. but for firing up a command prompt??? come on! Even emacs OS is more efficient.
If someone is violating your patents/trademarks, you go after the manufacturer. If they are a foreign company who doesn't honour the judgement of a local court, their product gets seized at the border. This is a ridiculous attempt to make retail stores liable for a dispute between 2 3rd parties... imagine the chaos this would unleash! if patent trolls could squeeze settlements from Walmart/Amazon for everything they sell?
The validity of this particular patent and the University's right to enforce it is entirely besides the point.
$30 for a large seedbox used to be fairly expensive, considering I how much I could have gotten with a Netflix and Crunchyroll subscription. The only benefit was satisfying my hoarding dysfunction.
Now, however, it's starting to look like a really good deal for just about everyone with a little know-how.
A couple days early for these stories, no?
