At least he explains why. MS has way more resources than Sun ever could manage. It surprises me that Java even got out the door, honestly. Also recall that MS hired the best and brightest away from Borland a few years before the inception of .NET. And look, the best of them (Anders) architects C# now.

The first is subjective... there are plenty of good things about dynamic weak typing.
ASI is garbage... and you're right so I personally don't use it.
I haven't been bit by scoping rules too many times, I think that's mostly because I don't write JS like it's C or Java.
I honestly never ever use octal. Either decimal or hex. That is a valid gripe but a small one.
The === vs == operator thing is dumb, but hardly as dumb as PHP's situation, and honestly in all the lines of JS I've written, I've never had to use ===.
Dumb but a small issue.
Dumb as well, but easily mitigated by not doing it.
You can poor-man's namespace. It's not as elegant as Java's or C++'s namespaces, but plenty of people manage to make it work.

You should read up on Illinois' castle doctrine. It's actually pretty permissive as far as your ability to defend yourself / family in your domicile. Cribbed from wikipedia:

(720 ILCS 5/) Criminal Code of 1961 Section 7. Justifiable use of force. Use of deadly force justified if the person reasonably believes they are in danger of death or great physical harm. Use of deadly force justified if the unlawful entry is violent, or the person believes the attacker will commit a felony upon gaining entry. Section 7-2(b). Prevents the aggressor from filing any claim against the defender unless the use of force involved "willful or wanton misconduct". Illinois has no requirement of retreat. (People v. Bush, 111 N.E.2d 326 Ill. 1953).

That said, the lack of CCW and the bullshit FOID are another story all together...

Back in the early 2000's I built kernel 2.0.36 on a 1994-era 40MHz 486DLC (shitty TI/Cyrix chip) w/ 12MB of RAM and it took about 10 hours. The AMD 386 my dad bought in like 1995 was also 40MHz and would stomp that 486 piece of garbage. I bet if you could find a high end 386 w/ 12MB of fastpage it would take about the same amount of time.
