Submission + - RIAA Moves to Keep Revenue Info Secret (blogspot.com) 1

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes: "In the Boston, Massachusetts, case, SONY BMG Music Entertainment v. Tenenbaum, the Court had ordered the RIAA to produce certain revenue information, which would be relevant to a determination of the 'fair use' defense. The RIAA has now moved for a protective order to keep the information 'confidential'. In the opinion of the undersigned, the fact that the motion is made jointly by four competitors shows that any claim the information is valuable or 'proprietary' would be unfounded, and the sole purpose for making the motion is to keep the information out of the hands of lawyers for other defendants, thus increasing the defense costs in other cases."

Submission + - Facebook Retroactively taking back User Names

Matt Wilson writes: "It appears Facebook is retroactively taking back user names for celebrities, even if you have a legitimate reason for having the user name. My wife previously had www.facebook.com/Brigitte (her name *is* Brigitte Wilson) until she just received this e-mail: From: The Facebook Team Date: Fri, 10 Jul 2009 12:37:36 -0700 Subject: Removed Username To: brigittew21@gmail.com Hi, Your chosen username was on a list of terms that were meant to be blocked from registration, and it was only made available as the result of an error. Submission + - SPAM: DARPA wants super lasers for imaging, sensing

coondoggie writes: "It's not supposed to blow things up like Star Trek's photonic emitter, but the type of super laser the US military wants for futuristic surveillance, 3D imaging, precision targeting and navigation is perhaps just as powerful. The extreme scientists at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency today said they want to develop a laser system the goes way beyond today's opto-mechanical, acousto-optical or electro-optical systems to establish photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology that will provide video frame rate beam steering speeds, and emit multiple beams with a total output power of 10 W. DARPA said Opto-mechanical scanning devices are usually bulky and relatively slow, while acousto- and electro-optical technologies utilize devices that while small in size, cannot provide the steering speeds and versatility necessary for many of the advanced applications the military envisions. Comment No mention of drug patches? (Score 1) 203

I had never heard of dermal drug delivery before neuromancer. Now people use patches for nicotine or birth-control (but nothing like the 'cocktails' of patches in the book's bar scenes).

"Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children being taught mathematical concepts...A graphic representation of data abstracted from banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like city lights, receding."

Maybe a board or committee should be formed to establish a standardized interface for 'jacking-in'. IEEE? AMA? LSD?

Absolutely!. We need to double our odds as fast as possible as a species. My concern is that there is a preoccupation with sinking us into another gravity well simply for a nice photo-op. We need to work on self-sustaining habitats that are space borne. The next logical step after creating a low Earth orbit platform (ISS) would be an assembly platform in either a higher Earth orbit or at one of the Lagrangian points this side of the Moon. space should actually be the destination.
