Using Linux To Make a Slow, Awful WAN Connection 110

Julie188 writes "This is a brilliant little Linux trick from Windows fanboy Tyson Kopczynski. He wanted to test a new Windows 7 feature called Branch Cache, which caches remote data on the local machine to reduce traffic on a stressed out WAN connection. But how to fake a crappy WAN? Linux. 'The command that I executed (tc) made use of Linux Traffic Control (a kernel thing) which allows me to easily interject 100ms latency on eth1. Boff, Bonk, Pow, Plop, Kapow, swa-a-p, whamm, zzzzzwap, bam ... instant WAN crappiness,' he writes."

The problem with this approach is that it decreases the realism of the AI player. When you reduce the amount of computation, the AI will begin to make incredibly stupid mistakes -- mistakes that are so stupid, no human would ever make them.

The author has obviously never played chess with me.

Someone's money earns them the right to have fancy cars and mansions. For better or worse, it also lets them afford bail and expensive lawyers. Don't punish people for their success... or the success of their family (Hilton).

Except that bail isn't meant to be punishment, it's meant to be a deterrent from fleeing the court. $1000 might be enough to induce a high school dropout working at 7-11 to return to court, the same amount wouldn't work on Bill Gates. It's bail not a fine, you get it back unless you skip town.

Selfish prick eh? Believe me that cop will change his behavior much more quickly after a large lawsuit in which he is revealed to be an complete idiot than he would after arguing with and tazing a skinny nerd with a camera. I learned a long time ago that arguing with morons is pointless and painful. It's much better to call them out in a public forum where it can be publicly and systematically determined that they are wrong.

If you want to defend your rights by fighting with cops go ahead. See how far that gets you.

I shouldn't have to get tased to stand up for my rights. Since cops are so taser happy these days I'd rather take the sneaky approach. There is no way I can physically stand up to guys with guns, batons, and tazers but most third graders can easily outsmart most cops. I'd rather take them on in a way where I can get what I want and then sue the crap out of them later. Better to let them think they have won and temporarily satisfy their macho self image only to prove to them how stupid they are later.

Now if we start hiring intelligent, trained police officers I might change my tune. But I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I am sick and tired of hearing about all these so called "peaceful religions" killing each other becuase they don't like the fairytale the other side believes in. Of course I don't buy music from iTunes either. But I know people who do and they don't notice it either. I don't really care either way. Whenever the powers that be come up with a new way to try to restrict bits some geek somewhere finds a way around it. The actions of corporations in this arena are meaningless.
