Nail, head hit. To me, the cloud is another piece of media, like a tape, hard disk, SSD, USB flash drive, or punchcard. Said media has its uses, but it also has shortcomings.

How could you store Media on the cloud anyway. Wouldn't it be expensive to mail all the CDs, USB drives, Tapes and hard drives to the cloud where ever they are. It would be much more sensible to store Data on the cloud.

The rumors of my death are highly exaggerated . . .

The desktop has grown up and become as good as it can be. CPU speed can't be increased. Screen resolution is maxed out. Audio is CD quality. Everything has gone past being good enough and they last a long time so there is no longer an Upgrade Path to take. Surely sales will go down as a result, but the desktop will never die.

theres no point in buying a 3dtv or a 4k ultra resolution tv when you cant watch anything on it with either... television is at best 1080p, and you can only get fake 3d tv. if you want to watch a 3d movie, you have to pay extra. if you want to stream movies, dont even think you will get 4k resolution any time soon. even if you could find something online with 4k resolution, you wouldnt be able to stream it without a gigabit internet connection.

You already own content that can be viewed on a 4k TV. I'm sure that your Photo Camera pictures are much higher resolution than 4k and would come alive on a 4k television.

Submission + - Cord-cutting: Pay-TV companies lose 113,000 customers in quarter (latimes.com)

wooferhound writes: This year will probably be the worst for the pay-TV industry in terms of customer retention, according to a report Tuesday by independent research firm MoffettNathanson.

Veteran Wall Street media analysts Craig Moffett and Michael Nathanson calculated that the pay-TV industry — which includes cable, satellite and phone companies offering video service — lost 113,000 subscribers during the third quarter.

Cable operators lost 687,000 subscribers in the period, according to their estimates. That was a far steeper decline than the year-ago period. And though the satellite TV and telephone companies picked up about 574,000 subscribers, it wasn't enough to erase the net loss for the industry.

"The pay-TV industry has reported its worst 12-month stretch ever," Moffett and Nathanson wrote.
