Thanks to Jeff Buske you don't have to be embarrassed while going through the full body scanners at the airport. Buske has invented radiation shielding underwear for the shy traveler. From the article: "Jeff Buske says his invention uses a powdered metal that protects people's privacy when undergoing medical or security screenings. Buske of Las Vegas, Nev.-Rocky Flats Gear says the underwear's inserts are thin and conform to the body's contours, making it difficult to hide anything beneath them. Australian Justice Minister Brendan O'Connor has advised visitors to take a better safe than sorry policy when it comes to their porn stashes, and declare all porn that they think might be illegal with customs officers. UK Man Prevented From Finding Chipped Pet Under Data Protection Act 340
Dave Moorhouse was elated when he was informed that a microchip provider had information on the whereabouts of his stolen dog. This joy soon faded when the company informed him that it could not divulge the Jack Russell terrier's location because it would breach the Data Protection Act. Last week a court agreed with the chip company and refused Mr Moorhouse's request for a court order compelling them to reveal the name and address of the new owners. Steven Wildridge, managing director of the chip company said: “This is not a choice, it’s an obligation under the Data Protection Act. If the individuals involved do not want us to pass on their details to the original owner then we cannot do so unless compelled to following a criminal or civil proceeding."

Apparently everyone in the US has the right to vote except cowards? The expectation of privacy in a petition is not much different from the expectation of privacy at the voting booth. This is not about gay rights. This about creating an environment where the voters can feel as safe as possible so that the bills passed can express the true desires of the public. I can think of many possibilities for future abuses of this ruling. I also find it frightening that all the arguments against privacy in the petition I've seen in these comments can be used to abolish privacy in the voting booth as well. Or anonymous usage of the internet for that matter. You're all saying we shouldn't ever do anything we don't want to have made public. I thought I was reading Slashdot?

Everything the government subsidizes to "help the people" distorts markets by raising the price or over production.
Anytime someone says "Everything the government [does is bad]" you know they're whargarbling ideology and are not dealing with reality.
That aside, most markets are already distorted for a variety of governmental and non-govermental reasons, long before government subsidies get involved.
TLDR much? "This is not to be confused with long lead time gov. led efforts, such as basic research, environmental studies and the like, in which a "market" either would not exist or would be dysfunctional due to lack or participants. Government clearly has important roles. Providing student loans is not one of them."
