Comment Silly grammar discussions (Score 1) 117

Who would want to trust putting time into a language where silly grammar fights about basic syntax happen, especially about basic things like how to design a loop. What will be crucial how fast it is. Can it be used to produce something as complex as video editing software with decent performance?

Comment slippery road (Score 1) 244

The New York Times column dismissed it as "small insignificant changes" and does not understand the outrage. But where does it end? What if internet providers would start filtering some words, what if reading devices or smartphones automatically would start altering text? It is a matter of trust. There should be zero tolerance to that.

Comment Why? (Score 1) 186

stability and reliability is probably the main reason that I like unix. It is rock solid and I trust it. I currently count 15thousand shell files .sh in my personal directory and most commands like this one, which finds them find . -name *.sh -print|wc are not even countes because I prefer to just type them in directly. So, if something small changes in one of the core commands, maybe just the way how errors are handled or that there is a new limit on the number of files which can be processed comfortably, this would be a disaster. There is also the aspect of trust. I trust routines which have been around for a long time more than something cobbled together just recently.

Spot on. This is probably also what most would conclude who can think clearly and followed the story, looked at all arguments, not just slurped in what the media outlets shouted. And it is a fact that the US Government has announced it. The funny thing is how well and effective government propaganda machines still work, also in the west. And also here to labels your post as a troll, shame on the moderators.

Comment remember glassholes. (Score 2) 34

the problem with glasses has been shown to be social in the case of google glasses. It was scraped because of mockery like the sketch in Saturday night live and by labeling the owners glassholes. Also with VR glasses, like when flying FPV (the only situation where I have worn googles myself), the problem is that being absorbed in the other world feels just strange for others nearby. I myself can not wear it too long also because I start to feel uncomfortable. A virtual reality glass where one also has still can have contact with the real world might be a better experience for the person who carries it but again somehow could feel for others like being photographed or recorded. The difficulty of adaption might be social again. Eventually, there is no doubt that if the technology allows for example to link output from a cellphone directly and unnoticed, that this could become the new normal.

Comment stop buying politicians (Score 1) 69

There could be a simple solution. Just stop allowing to buy politicians in general. Plain and simple. Just ban any political contributions. As a start, no super packs, no dark contributions (every contribution needs to be public), no lobby money. Better would be to disallow any buying of politicians at all. It would be plain and simple and avoid lots of problems. In the case of FTX, there was obviously a goal to avoid regulations in a new and not yet regulated area and campagin money indeed could have helped to keep things unregulated and unchecked.

Comment rostand quote (Score 2) 87

The fact that both parties were bought by contributions explains very well how little appears to be done to investigate this. Bending a quote of Rostand ("âoeKill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god." ) one could say "steal a dollar and you are a thief, steal a million and you are an entrepreneur, steal billions and you are a god." At least both political parties must have believed in his philanthropy. Why the heck would you fund all parts of the party spectrum? Obviously it was to have no initiatives for regulations of this type of intermingled exchange/investing business with FTX/Alameda. The fact that SBF was celebrated in the main press like in a NYT interview after the entire debacle is just mind boggling. Bernie Madoff had been arrested quite quickly. Madoff just obviously must have missed the part to buy the politics first.

Comment your opinion, man! (Score 4, Interesting) 110

"Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man". Why is this even a story? Because he is a PhD student at a university? In any case, banks and credit card companies at any time could decide to ban crypto currencies. China and 8 other countries started to ban crypto. Independent Cryptocurrency companies also do not produce that warm fuzzy feeling of confidence , as the last few weeks have shown.

Comment impressive but not surprising (Score 1) 30

while this is really a nice result, it is not surprising that a computer can fine-tune an idea by intelligently searching. Optimizing matrix multiplication required a genius initial idea (mostly Strassen) but once the idea is known, it is natural to fine-tune it with the help of a machine rather than trying to improve the algorithm by hand by modifying the idea. The optimal strategy for matrix multiplication is still not known. It is likely that a computer will get there. It will then however need an other idea (mostly likely not found by the computer) that one has reached the optimal strategy.

Comment no thanks! (Score 1) 19

this should be built into youtube itself and not need a separate player, separate set-up, maybe even separate account. How long will this service exist? Until they decide it is not used enough and retired? Remember Google + All down the drain. It will probably happen also with this new service if creators see that nobody actually watches this proprietary stuff. What then? I myself was one of the original google video fans and when things moved over to youtube, all was lost. They argued that an automatic transfer to youtube is not possible due to copy right issues. Well, That might again happen. No thanks!
