Comment Sales are one metric but not the only one (Score 1) 1010

I'm more interested in how many people are using PCs - I couldn't really care less how many new PCs are sold.
PCs last longer than they used to. Single-threaded performance isn't increasing anymore and multiple threads aren't being used that much, meaning performance gains are no longer a major reason for upgrades.

Also, a lot of what would have been laptop sales are now tablet sales.

Submission + - Crowd-funding effort to trial new cancer treatment (guardian.co.uk)

opusman writes: In a possible first for the crowd-funding model, researchers at the University of Uppsala in Sweden are attempting to raise money to take a promising new cancer treatment to human trials. Much of the research has been released in the public domain so no pharmaceutical company is interested in funding the research, and even Apple (who would seem to be an obvious source of funds given that Steve Jobs died of a cancer this treatment could have helped with) are disinterested in contributing.

This actually is pretty stupid though. When you're driving in the country in Australia it's not like there are thousands of different main roads leading to a multitude of destinations. Once you get away from the east coast it's pretty sparsely populated and the major towns are signposted from hundreds of kilometres away. You would have to pretty wilfully ignore both the road signage and common sense to turn off the main road.
