"IP numeric"? "IP holders"? They obviously aren't techies or tech-aware...which makes you wonder how they can ever be trusted to know what they're doing with these legal threats. Oh, yes, that's right, the whole things is a bit dodgy anyway - that explains the lack of technical awareness.

Right - the Solicitors Regulatory Authority are a bit dodgy - oh wait - they were the ones who used the IP Numeric term, not the lawyers who sent out the notices.

But let's not let facts get in the way of our comments.

I agree wholeheartedly. In addition to the option not to fly, IT'S NOT A BIG F'ING DEAL!

I fly almost every week for work and you stand in line for a bit, take your shoes off, put your laptop in a bin and stand in the machine for a few seconds and then move on.

If the lack of wholly GPL software on iOS bothers enough customers, there are other smartphone platforms that are known for not having such a tightly controlled app ecosystem.

That is EXACTLY what the article is about!

Unfortunately it won't make a lick of difference because the only people using VLC are geeks who already know the score with regards to Apple's app store policies. Now if Angry Birds was a GPL app and you took it away from everyone's i Phone/Pad/Touch...well I don't even want to think what would happen.

Maybe there's more to Wi-Fi Direct than what Ad Hoc networking offers - I really don't know..

So you could take a minute to post the fact you are uninformed to slashdot, or you could have spent that same minute informing yourself...

From the FAQ linked in the article...

Is this the same as Ad Hoc mode?

No. Ad Hoc, or IBSS, mode is a legacy protocol for Wi-Fi devices, and Wi-Fi Direct is a new innovation. Wi-Fi Direct brings important security features, ease of setup, and higher performance that is not currently available in Ad Hoc mode. With Wi-Fi Direct, a device can maintain a simultaneous connection to an infrastructure network – this isn’t possible with Ad Hoc.

uhhh, Apple TV has been out for many years and works fine with non-apple wifi and non apple computers. It does require iTunes, but last I heard iTunes was software, not hardware.

There's no reason to assume the new Apple TV won't work the same way, just without the streaming of video from whatever computer iTunes is on.

Okay so you lead the cops to the address of the guy that has 'your' phone.

They confiscate the phone (if it is still there) and it is now evidence in a case. It sits in the police evidence room for 6 months or more awaiting a court date...you really don't gain anything from the whole procedure, except maybe getting the privilege of spending a significant amount of time on the whole process.

The police barely have enough time to find lo-jacked cars, never mind $200 cell phones...

Demand for rentals is THROUGH THE ROOF right now due to the downturn

Not it's not - in most places anyways. There was just a thing on npr about this - lots of people are moving back with parents or renting a room in a house, as opposed to getting their own apartment. There is a rental glut due to inmvestors buying houses cheap and renting them out.

I have a rental and am not looking forward to finding new renters when my current renters leave in a few months.
