Last week Bill Gates was quoted here on Slashdot as saying about AI, "I'm pretty sure, within the next five years, we'll understand it." Translation for the naive: "I'm pretty sure, within the next five years, we'll find a way to make obscene profits."

I'm not providing them content so they can waste my time with stupid ads. If I'm forced to look something up, I use FreeTube. It was fun while it lasted but now I've moved-on. There's an infinite world of other content besides Google.

It's funny you should use the word, worship. You are spot-on. I've been looking at the philosophical ramifications of AI and it is quickly becoming a new religion for atheists. Atheists are still sheep always looking for some leader to follow. Like every human, atheists need to believe the future will be better. They have "faith" that AI won't be used by corporations to squeeze us for more profit while providing less service. Atheists are just Christians living in a different fantasy world where technology is their god and technologists are the disciples. I guess that makes Bill Gates the Pope.

I'm often amused when I hear the way my friends text using speech or commands to their personal assistants, "open paren-capital E-small-c-h-o-close paren-full stop-happy face" We have already seen it is easier to train people to talk like computers than make computers understand plain language. Computer-like inflection and emphasis has already invaded our speech. AI is already retraining humans to accept the garbage AI prefers to produce and abandon all hope of quality, accuracy, and insight. Humans will be brain-washed to accept AI mediocrity and stop expecting actual creativity or intelligence. I haven't heard anyone claim their Echo works better now than it did 10-years ago? Once again the human race will learn to accept less jobs, more profit, and crappy solutions.

This is only the first step. Look at the goal. A legal system where AI could replace lawyers, help select jurors or even decide cases. What's next? AI powered governments? Don't say I didn't warn you.

I've looked into some of these phony treatments for tinnitus and all the "results" (so far) rely on self reporting and the placebo effect. I understand some people have medical conditions that have no cure and they are, unfortunately mined by charlatans for cash. I hope I'm never that desperate for a cure. Throughout my very long life I've used my 100/50-50/100 rule. I don't take any treatment unless 100% of the participants report a 50% improvement or 50% report 100% improvement. Everyone should have their own copy of the Snake Oil chart in their personal medical file.

I don't share your optimism. We live in a dystopian World now because everyone lives in a fantasy bubble of justice, fairness, privacy, health, democracy, and super-heros. It's clear to me than absolutely no one knows what is really going on. Here on Slashdot just like everywhere else, the mere suggestion things are not the way they appear is roundly cancelled. When was the last time a victim received justice? Who is truly healthy when we are all dying? Was there ever a fully honest election? If there is no God then there is no plan, only chaos.
