Comment Legends (Score 1) 55

Legends wasn't Open Source. It was a re-write of Tribes 2 with licensed Tribes 2 code, with the mechanics of Tribes so you know, it was fun. I know this because my Debian box was used by a friend to test build it during college (yes, Linux support was a goal). I've looked to see if the source tree was still in my backups, but I think I lost it. Oh well, shouldn't really have had it anyway.

Microsoft Says IE Faster Than Chrome and Firefox 532

An anonymous reader writes "According to its own speed tests, Microsoft's Internet Explorer loads most websites faster than both Chrome and Firefox when looking at the top 25 websites on the Internet. 'As you can see, IE8 outperforms Firefox 3.05 and Chrome 1.0 in loading 12 websites, Chrome 1.0 places second by loading nine sites first, and Firefox brings up the rear by loading four sites faster than the other two browsers. Also, in case you missed it, IE loads mozilla.com faster than Firefox, and Firefox loads microsoft.com faster than IE, just for kicks.'"

That's an interesting idea and maybe it will happen one day, but hardware virt hasn't trickled down that far yet. It' still at the mid-range server level, except a few power users, developers, and engineers. Cards now how have dynamic virtual memory mapping, which might just make this possible, but certainly not simple.

In the Land of UNIX Where Everything Works you can send GLX over the network for 3D graphics where ever the card lives, whether it's a VM host or a cluster headnode. That's probably more useful than emulating the 25 year old VGA BIOS and umpteen stupid extensions.

I've never seen a 6400 in the wild, so I had to look it up. Looks like an oddball. Even the All-in-one Performas could be opened easily. The PowerMac 7x00 desktops could be opened by grabbing two handles and lifting. Shortly after this era came the clamshell towers, which were extremely accessible (although the hard drives had to be screwed to metal plates, wtf).

I know what you mean, but I bought a white MacBook a little while ago, before they went nVidia, and was pleasantly surprised when I could play HL 2 with CrossOver Games about as well as I could on my old Athlon 64. OK, so HL 2 is probably considered "old" now, too, but you don't need all the sliders to the right to enjoy a game.

It means free of cost, at least, initial cost. Free beer has been used as an enticement to bring people to a place or event where they are likely to pay for something that will net more benefit to the person who paid for the beer and is now giving it away. So, it does have some subtle undertone, but it basically means what "gratis" means in many languages.

Part of your point, that telcos are lazy and negligent, is exactly why this is enticing. Maybe if the telcos didn't have to install new hardware on private property, the cost to roll out broadband would be cheaper. Of course, without the opportunity to gouge the customer on that new hardware, the enticement might be gone. This could also open the possibility of third-party bandwidth providers like WISPs, and not being pigeon-holed into one of 3 delightfully crappy plans.
