Submission + - Kogan.com mysteriously disappears from Microsoft Search Engines (kogan.com)

wirelessduck writes: Microsoft has hit back at Kogan over its ‘Internet Explorer 7 tax’ stunt last month, according to the outspoken boss of the online retailer, removing it from Bing’s search results. In a blog post, CEO and founder Ruslan Kogan wrote that the tax was not an attack on Microsoft, but rather a simple encouragement for people to upgrade their browsers. “We never waged war against Microsoft over IE7, we simply wanted people to upgrade their web browsers – we even mentioned many times in the media how the latest versions of Internet Explorer comply with the latest web standards and are suitable browsers.”

Submission + - Microsoft Allegedly Delists Company From Bing for IE7 Tax (news.com.au)

jollyrgr3 writes: "An Aussie company, Kogan, decides to tax the users of IE7 6.8% for using their site. Kogan claims this is due to the amount of time required to code their pages to work properly with IE7. The Kogan AU domain no longer Bing search results. Kogan hopes it is a temporary glitch. Microsoft denies tampering with search results."

Bugtraq and Full Disclosure mailing lists are a good read. Almost all new vulnerabilities are posted to one of these lists. In addition, many Linux distros post their security notices here (Ubuntu used to, but now only posts on their own list). The CERT list mentioned by previous commenters is also good, even if it can be a little slow at getting the news out. Microsoft, Apple and others report their security notices through this list.

All major web browsers have supported JSON.parse() for a long time; including IE8. Anyone who is still using eval() for parsing JSON should come out of their cave and get with the times. I doubt you would find any serious web developer who still uses eval(), except in "extreme" circumstances. There's just no real need for it in most applications.

Submission + - IT price hike inquiry kicks off: Submissions wanted (delimiter.com.au)

wirelessduck writes: After some recent complaints from a Labor MP about price markups on software and technology devices in Australia, Federal Government agencies decided to look in to the matter and an official parliamentary inquiry into the issue was started.

"The Federal Parliament’s inquiry into local price markups on technology goods and services has gotten under way, with the committee overseeing the initiative issuing its terms of reference and calling for submissions from the general public on the issue."

Submission + - US slams Australia's on-shore cloud fixation (delimiter.com.au)

wirelessduck writes: "The United States’ global trade representative has strongly criticised a perceived preference on the part of large Australian organisations for hosting their data on-shore in Australia, claiming it created a significant trade barrier for US technology firms and was based on a misinterpretation of the US Patriot Act." Somehow, I don't think it's just Australia that is avoiding putting their data anywhere within reach of the USA government.

I can only hope the new "Mobile Experience" actually works this time. Viewing slashdot on an iPhone is like playing Russian roulette. Only about 1 in 10 times will the site actually show up in the "Mobile" layout. Every other time, I'm stuck viewing slashdot in the "desktop" interface/layout on this tiny screen. Seriously, how hard can it be to detect a mobile browser and use the mobile-specific interface every time?

Mum said it was funny how one day you're not famous, and the next day you are. Famous. And then you're not again.

And can I just say how disenchanted I am with the legal system.
