At least in the USA, then you get nailed for anywhere from 10-40% surcharges for "business-class service" which basically means you pay $400 a year for fixed IP and the "privilege" of running a server on your own broadband line."

My ISP tries to explain the ridiculous cost boost on "well, you get 'priority' on service calls. You have 10 email addresses and 10MB of free web space on our server!"

I shut them up one time:

I've been on "the internet" longer than you've existed as a company. Even at 2am, nobody has ever asked me if I was a business customer. And if I'm running my own server, whadduigivefuck about your "free email addresses and webspace?" I HAVE A SERVER.

Who pays for that?

Oh, wait. Canadians are rather accepting of abuse on the part of their phone/cable/broadband suppliers, and the Tories back up the big businesses.

I own an 1840 stone house and barn built into the side of the Blue Ridge. Today, it was 99 degrees outside.

In the barn, it was 73.

Last winter, it was 0 outside. In the barn, 41.

They had this stuff figured out before the Millard Fillmore administration: don't build your house in the middle of a cornfield that still wants to be a cornfield.

Oh, and please quit making new humans. We've already got more than enough.

Thanks for making me ingest content at the speed of the slowest talker in the video, not at my reading speed.

If you post a video in lieu of text, you just wasted the world's time.

While I appreciate ESR's statements, pinheaded politicians and bureaucrats tend to take things the wrong way regardless how small the words are you use to spell it out. I can picture some knucklehead seeing the Gilmore quote and saying, "well, these internet geeks are getting militant! They're threatening us!" And then they do stoopid things like propose federal licensing of all network engineers backed by heavy fines and Federal prison terms, to where resetting your own WAP would get you a year in jail and a $50,000 fine.
