Comment Re:The government can't do anything right? (Score 1) 260

The purpose of government is to bring economy of scale to projects that would fail if profit were the sole motivator.

Voluntary exchange of goods and/or services is not the only way the majority make their "demand" known. More to the point: if the majority wanted a voluntary-anarchist stateless society, we'd have that.

Comment Don't judge the rules; judge the evidence (Score 1) 111

Require that abuse reports include a freeform description of why the suspected content violates the rules.

Then, don't ask the jurors whether the content violates the rules. Instead, ask them: Is (the freeform description) a true statement about the suspected content?

In other words: someone reports content for violation of TOS. Reason: "This content contains nudity."

The juror then gets the moderation request, and they answer a single question. Is: "This content contains nudity" true about the suspected content?

You're not judging the rules; you're judging the evidence.

Right. God forbid that we should display some simple human decency and maybe some sensitivity.

What the fuck has happened to people? This is a mother mourning her child, for god's sake. I'm not giving much of a fuck right now about a multi-billion dollar corporation and their next license to print money.

If having some basic human decency is "politically correct" then fuckin' A. I'm as politically correct as they come.

Supermassive Black Hole Is Thrown Out of Galaxy 167

DarkKnightRadick writes "An undergrad student at the University of Utrecht, Marianne Heida, has found evidence of a supermassive black hole being tossed out of its galaxy. According to the article, the black hole — which has a mass equivalent to one billion suns — is possibly the culmination of two galaxies merging (or colliding, depending on how you like to look at it) and their black holes merging, creating one supermassive beast. The black hole was found using the Chandra Source Catalog (from the Chandra X-Ray Observatory). The direction of the expulsion is also possibly indicative of the direction of rotation of the two black holes as they circled each other before merging."

Submission + - Dell Announces "Energy Smart" Servers

eldavojohn writes: "Dell has recently announced that it will be marketing energy smart servers by 10 to 20 percent. From the article, "Energy efficiency has risen to the top of the agenda for server makers, given the increasing electricity demands of processors and other computing components, combined with rising power costs. IBM and Hewlett-Packard have programs to reduce data-center power consumption, and the U.S. Congress has urged customers to buy efficient servers." The article doesn't mention anything about Google's urges for power supply redesign but with 450,000 servers, perhaps Dell is marketing more for these kinds of internet companies?"

Submission + - NASA Announces Plans for Permanent Lunar Base

eldavojohn writes: "NASA has finally unveiled plans for a lunar base. Space.com is running a registration free version of the story. This looks like an actual attempt to build a permanent base on the moon. From the article, "NASA has decided to pursue a base on the Moon. The space agency rolled out today a strategy and rationale for robotic and human exploration of the Moon — determining that a lunar outpost is the best approach to achieve a sustained, human presence on the Moon." Check out their newly posted page on potential base designs."
