Submission + - How To Get Rid Of The Facebook Ticker

An anonymous reader writes: Earlier this week, Facebook rolled out an updated News Feed, as well as the real-time Ticker feed, to its 800 million active users. As always, many were unhappy with the changes but they couldn’t do anything as Palo Alto does not offer an option to revert to previous site designs. Thankfully, there's an easy way to get rid of it, courtesy of Web developer Arik Fraimovich.

Submission + - Compressing aluminum at ultrahigh strain rates (llnl.gov)

RogerRoast writes: Using an ultrafast spectroscopic technique, used to track shocks on a time scale of ten trillionths of a second, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientists measured breakouts (driven by laser-induced shocks) in aluminum thin films with accelerations in the range of 10 trillion g's. They were able to see the aluminum being compressed to 400,000 atmospheres in about 20 trillionths of a second.

Eat an organic & vegetarian (preferably vegan) diet.

Not quite as good - some people can't properly digest plant materials. Humans are not herbivores after all, we're omnivores, and without a full spectrum diet, we're not getting all of the inputs we need. If you're going the vegetarian route, you need to include a lot of vitamin supplements.

That is absolutely not true. All of the nutrients humans need can be found it plants. You just need to eat the right plants. You are correct that you cannot just take meat out of your diet, you need to replace it with other plant-based foods.

I was using the family computer (windows XP) for a while. I knew some things about how to use it, but not much. When I found an old (1990s-ish) laptop, and set it up with windows 98, I learned many more things about how the hardware and software of a computer work. When I got my own laptop, then a year later switched to Linux, I learned quite a bit more. Since then, I have become much better with computers, as I tried new things and had to fix everything I broke. Working with the terminal and C made me a much better typer than any software program. Having to set up each thing with very little outside support really taught me a lot. If the kids just get the computers with everything set up, and someone to fix it when it breaks, it will not help them a lot.
