Why would anyone pay for something that is required to make things work?

That is exactly how I feel too! In order to get MS Office to work, they claim I need a product key. Ha! Product key, Scmoduct Key.

I was also told that in order to get Ender's Game to work on my TV screen I needed to buy a digital copy off of Amazon Prime for $19.99. Oh these silly people. Luckily I know how to make this stuff work without their help.

This is fucking insipid. But as long as it adds to the mirage that Your Government Cares, then let the show go on right?

I think any communication between the public and our government that is open and transparent has value. Even if it does not get the desired result immediately, it influences public opinion in our government as the people observe the ebb and flow of government in action. Government officials are almost always influenced to at least some degree by their public perception.

Wrong. This is a class action suit on behalf of cell phone owner's. That gives this case standing.

Who specifically has been harmed in which specific manner? What were the specific monetary damages incurred?

Those are the questions of the case. But those are not the questions that lead to a ruling of lack of standing.

First I wipe all the data. Then do it again for good measure. Then I disassemble the entire thing and find anything that could possibly include any digital memory. I then smash it with a hammer until it is little tiny bits (no pun intended) and I burn the bits.

That isn't what I actually do. That is what I tell myself I'm going to do with it one day. In truth I'm guilty of #3 like most people.

CERN Wants a New Particle Collider Three Times Larger Than the LHC 238

Daniel_Stuckey writes "Not content with the 27-kilometer-round Large Hadron Collider, researchers at CERN have their sights set on a new beast of a particle collider that could have a circumference of 80 to 100 kilometers. The nuclear research organization announced that it was hatching plans for an ambitious successor to the LHC with an international study called the Future Circular Colliders program, which will kick off with a meeting next week. The idea is to consider different hadron collider designs similar to the existing LHC but more powerful — much more powerful. CERN wrote it was looking for a collider 'capable of reaching unprecedented energies in the region of 100 TeV.' The existing LHC will reach a maximum of around 14 TeV."

I also am a libertarian/conservative-leaning voter who, I believe, has to have a similar view to you. But on Net Neutrality, the freedom of the people cannot be protected by giving freedom to an oligarchy. In the modern day, the people are not only subject to the limitations of law. More and more, they are subject to the rules set by corporate oligarchies. In the US, unlike in Korea, there is a gentlemen's agreement amongst internet providers to limit the speeds that we should expect. The capitalist idea of personal property has been perverted over the last 30 years by the use of EULA's that is prevelant, which teach people that they only own their computers to the degree that MicrosoftApple tells them they can.

If you would prefer a company that provides freer computing or freer internet service, there's really no where to run.

Unless you exercise your free-market right to go shopping for a new government. Brazil is looking pretty good to me.
