Comment Re:Sadly, I'm old enough... (Score 1) 505

When I went to work at a new place in 1998, they had a Modcomp computer running their process. It had a floor mounted hard disk drive that was 4 MB, I think. I replaced the whole system with a Unix environment. The 4MB drive was about half the size of a refrigerator and had a glass bubble top so you could change the platter. I called him R2D2.

Jordanian Mayor Angry Over "Alien Invasion" Prank 217

krou writes "Jordanian mayor Mohammed Mleihan has taken a dim view of local newspaper Al-Ghad's April Fools prank, which saw a front page story claiming that 'flying saucers flown by 3m (10ft) creatures had landed in the desert town of Jafr.' The paper claimed that communication networks had gone down, and people were fleeing the area. The mayor called the local security authorities, who combed the area, but they were unable to find any evidence of the aliens. Mr Mleihan is now considering suing because of the distress it caused to residents: 'Students didn't go to school, their parents were frightened and I almost evacuated the town's 13,000 residents. People were scared that aliens would attack them.'" I guess they've never heard of Orson Welles in Jordan.

Genre Wars — the Downside of the RPG Takeover 248

Phaethon360 writes "From Bioshock and Modern Warfare 2 to even Team Fortress 2, RPG elements are creeping into game genres that we never imagined they would. This change for the most part has managed to subtly improve upon genres that needed new life, but there's a cost that hasn't been tallied by the majority of game developers. 'The simple act of removing mod tools, along with the much discussed dedicated server issue, has made [MW2] a bit of a joke among competitive players. Gone are the days of "promod," and the only option you have is to play it their way. If Infinity Ward are so insistent on improving the variety of our experiences, they don’t have to do it at the expense of the experience that many of us already love. It really is that simple. If they don’t want to provide a good "back to basics experience," they could at least continue to provide the tools that allow us to do that for ourselves.'"

Looking Back At Dungeons & Dragons 189

An anonymous reader sends in a nostalgic piece about Dungeons & Dragons and the influence it's had on games and gamers for the past 36 years. Quoting: "Maybe there was something in the air during the early '70s. Maybe it was historically inevitable. But it seems way more than convenient coincidence that Gygax and Arneson got their first packet of rules for D&D out the door in 1974, the same year Nolan Bushnell managed to cobble together a little arcade machine called Pong. We've never had fun quite the same way since. Looking back, these two events set today's world of gaming into motion — the Romulus and Remus of modern game civilization. For the rest of forever, we would sit around and argue whether games should let us do more or tell us better stories."

PhD Candidate Talks About the Physics of Space Battles 361

darthvader100 writes "Gizmodo has run an article with some predictions on what future space battles will be like. The author brings up several theories on propulsion (and orbits), weapons (explosives, kinetic and laser), and design. Sounds like the ideal shape for spaceships will be spherical, like the one in the Hitchhiker's Guide movie."

I love eBooks! I read them on my iPhone constantly. Project Gutenberg is an excellent source of an endless number of books that I should have already read. Right now I'm reading Bullfinch's books on mythology. I have no nostalgic attachment to paper books for whatever reason. I find that I am very likely to eventually finish a large tome (eTome?) if it is in my pocket at all times. A book can lay on my nightstand for a year and I may never finish it, but the eBook will always eventually be completed.

I second this motion. I have worked on my mother-in-law's computer in the past. She chain smokes and that computer was NASTY. I don't know if that is a biohazard or not, but it damned sure should be. Just messing with the case and the screws gets your hands sticky. If it's got that nasty sticky stuff on it, I say void the warranty.

I switched from WinMob 6.1 to an iPhone too. I'll never go back. I will never buy another phone that has to be operated with a toothpick.

I read books very often with Stanza. It's great. I just bought a book for it this weekend. "A History of the American People". For reading my Game FAQs and walkthroughs, I use GoodReader. It formats nicely so that a standard ASCII document can be read in landscape view without word wrapping which screws up the ASCII tables and makes them hard to use.

The Droid looks to be a very nice phone too. I watched demos of it on the internet. It looks very iPhone like which is a good thing. I could see myself buying one of those in the future if android turns out to be as slick as the iPhone OS. I would like to be able to develop apps for my phone without special permission from Apple and without buying a damned Mac computer.
