The main ones I have found which only work with early versions are embedded web apps in things like telephone systems. We had a Mitel 3300 which just would not work with anything later than IE6. The developers in their wisdom wrote some browser detection into the pages that if you weren't using IE6 told you it needed IE6 or later then refused to display anything else.

While people are "happy" to pay high prices for capped and low speed / unreliable services there is no incentive for the internet providers to spend vast amounts upgrading the infrastructure.

You either need a government backed incentive to roll out high speed internet country wide (meaning to everyone not just people in cities) or you need some foreign companies to start moving into the US market to introduce some competition that will force the existing companies to become more competitive in the price and quality of what they offer.

On a side note, my company's sister company has been told they will have to wait until after the Olympics have finished before BT will enable their FTTC connection.

Even though the exchange is enabled and ready to go (and they are in the building next door to the exchange).

Apparently BT have all their engineers on call in London.
