Comment is this street smart? (Score 1) 584

since the term used is not intelligent but smart, probably this can be more of street smart type.

i probably have higher street smart quotient than iq. :)

my take on the matter, i hope that more intelligent people will find practical use for their talents so our world can be better.

Comment intel has a powerful cpu (on a per core basis) (Score 1) 217

it's amazing that intel has improved the speed of the their cores twice that of amd. amd now has to compete by putting two cores for intel's single core. now if intel would actually package 12 cores in a single cpu (much like the core2 quad days,) then that would kill amd. of course, intel wouldn't do this since they are doing well and enjoying very very big margins compared to amd.

this has been an exciting week, it's amd vs intel on the cpu side and now nvidia and amd on the graphics side with the release of fermi. this week has been a fast one! kudos to them and hope they continue to make better products so we can all benefit from it. :)

I will have to agree with you.

Look at the new Windows Phone 7. It looks like they are following the footsteps of Apple. I have the feeling they are going to release the phone in limited varieties. The new design is quite impressive for me, thinking of buying when its out. This is a far cry from existing Windows Mobile 6.5 and below where the phone OS is visible. The new one, I suspect will have limited tweaking and customization capabilities in the OS.

I guess what can happen is that if you want the status symbol, get Apple. If you want to want to be hip and new, get Microsoft. If you are the geeky kind, get Android. Business users will be Blackberry. The market is getting more polarized. I guess there won't be a one size fits all phone. I had to accept the fact that you can't get business features with all the hip stuff. I've been waiting for a good HTC WinMo prone with keyboard and it seems they have killed it. I will have to accept that keyboards will be a thing of the past. Oh well. Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube is the new internet.

Comment reaching os limitations (Score 1) 362

we have just activated a 20TB array recently and plan to increase our capacity. we are doing video so the storage is still small. btw, we have 16tb (2 volumes) existing and plan to add another 20tb+16tb arrays.

it's quite interesting that file systems right now are still limited to 32bits. formatting the 20tb volume in ntfs actually had problems because smaller cluster sizes no longer works because of cluster allocation limit (much like the 2tb limit for mbr partitions.) doing a iometer test, we can only fill up to 16tb in the volume because of file size limitations in current windows implemention. in this age of time where drives are going by the tb, the os should now upgrade the filesystems to support bigger limits. although still far off with regular users having single drives, i think it will start to become more problematic for people soon.

for those big users, how do you get past those limits? though i guess you are not using "commodity" filesystems such as ntfs and ext3. but new fs such as hfs+ (new os version), ext4 and zfs do help make the new limits harder to reach for quite sometime.

well i think the "traditional" or "typical" filipino breakfast would be like the following combo:

viand + itlog (egg) + sinangag (garlic/fried rice)

that viand would typically be (almost available for most fastfood serving filipino breakfast):
tocino (to) - pork
tapa (tap) - beef
longganisa (long) - pork sausage
bangus - fish

some added options may include:
chicken (chix) - fried chicken
corned beef (corn)

and other options that i could not think of the name for the combination:
tuyo - dried fish
luncheon meat - like spam
sardines
tuna

the name combination is where it gets "creative":
tosilog - which means tocino, sinangag, itlog

but if you don't want the egg, you'll call it as:
tapsi - which means tapa and sinangag

p.s. living in the philippines. but my breakfast is pretty much westernized easting mostly bread, oats, cereal, and milk for breakfast (no time to cook!)

Comment different keys (Score 1) 939

esc - probably one of the most useful buttons because most users who would panic will just just escape. :P but i prefer the ctrl+shift+esc for the windows task manager.

CAPS LOCK - YOU WON'T USE IT IN MESSAGES BUT I WOULD USE IT WHEN TYPING FORMS, LABELS, ETC.

windows key - useful if you know the combinations. but i do use it to launch the start key. prefer using the keyboard instead of mouse. thanks slashdot, i am ignorant of this key of its more powerful shortcuts.

scroll lock - useful in excel. but sigh, i didn't get accustomed to using the scroll lock feature and have to be so o.c. in regular cell selection movement

context menu key - very useful since i try to use the keyboard instead of using the mouse. beats the hell out of moving your arm back and forth between keyboard and mouse. if only there is a shortcut key to control the mouse cursor by keyboard and have a left click button.

f-lock - very annoying key because of its placement between ctrl and alt. i always mispress when typing on different keyboards. but if you have a laptop, you'll need that to control monitor brightness, volume, etc.

pause/break - i use it from time to time to get bios/startup messages that flash too quickly

media keys - probably the most useless of them all. i don't install the custom software because it eats up resources and most of the time it doesn't work as i intend to. besides, don't play music in my computer. (so this one gets my vote)
