Submission + - Michael Jackson fan fined for 'pirating' bootlegs (theage.com.au)

alex4point0 writes: A grieving Melbourne fan with an 'unhealthy obsession' for the late Michael Jackson has been convicted and fined $24,000 for pirating the King of Pop's music and DVDs. Described in court as a caring and likeable, if ''unusual'', man, Matthew Zore's almost lifelong worship of Jackson grew into a lucrative online 'blackmarket' enterprise in Australia and overseas. (...) Police who raided Zore's home after British authorities found his DVDs of bootleg concerts on sale there found 7268 DVDs. (...) yet "None of the pirated work was commercially released material, but came from bootleg recordings, (Defence lawyer Michael Gleeson) said. Zore pleaded guilty to six charges, including possessing, making and selling infringing copies."

This rather strikes me as biting the hand that feeds you, with a dash of Streisand for effect. MJ fans can usually be relied on to buy every version of every album released on every continent. If they're not already aware of the bootleg industry, they are now. The article also fails to mention what relationship the UK and Australian police have in regard to sharing information. Can they provide information to prosecute someone who is breaking UK law if they're in another country? What if it's not against the law there? (convict jokes aside...)

How can you be fined for selling a copy of a recording that the studios and labels didn't create? Like the cinema industry, where insiders leak timed copies or review editions well before the screenies emerge, isn't it sound technicians and other crew who leak the better copies of concert footage?

The bootleg industry is a de-facto 'viral marketing mechanism' for everyone who profits from a tour, I can understand why it exists — and why the studios want to kill it, even though it will piss off MJ fans. They're about to run out of albums and merchandise to buy, anyway ...

Jerk City is the only place MSCS should ever be seen. It's a bit like the fridges at the CDC, a safe place to store nasty shit for research purposes -- and to see if it can be used as a weapon... for the uninitiated (or uninfected?) Jerk City is rendered in an old MS product, MS Comic Chat.

Spokespippil from the British and French Navies are today denying that two of their submarines have formed a bizarre romantic relationship.
The submarines were on separate exercises in the Atlantic Ocean, but managed to slip away from their surface vessel chaperones for a Beatles-esque underwater liaison.
Nooone was hurt in the collision and both Britain and France insist nuclear security was not compromised. Defence experts believe neither vessel was sufficiently aroused to involuntarily discharge ICBM or torpedo munitions, IYKWIM, AITYD. They theorise that the water was too cold, and the submarines were frightened they would be caught. However, it is understood that the submarines still managed to spend a brief moment alone together, intimately fondling their conning towers and sonar arrays.
HMS Vanguard and Le Triumphante have both updated social netwrok pages denying the incident.

As a 'Guardian'- and 'New Yorker'-reading leftie hipster emopants, I knew that by playing this game I was participating in what some people would call a hate crime - but as far as design and playability are concerned it is no different to Commando, Cannon Fodder, and ethically it is no different to running around in the backyard as a 10-year-old pretending to kill 'Germans', 'Russians', 'VC' and so on. That this game got buried so quick and dismissed as dull etc missed the point. Games like this are a legitimate reaction to the 24/7 media saturation of the 'threat of terrorism'.

If anything there should be an iconoclast construction kit game - pick the faith (or cult) you wish to offend, uppload a few sprites, bob's your media outrage. Faith Fighter comes hilariously close - seeing God slip in the occasional headbutt and Mohammad (PBUH ;) point at the sky and shout 'Allah ahuackbar!" is hilarious. See if you can unlock the end boss ... you'll never guess who it is.

Mario Lanza, you were right all along.

Ah! Sweet mystery of life
At last I've found thee
Ah! I know at last the secret of it all;
All the longing, seeking, striving, waiting, yearning
The burning hopes, the joy and idle tears that fall!
For 'tis love, and love alone, the world is seeking,
And 'tis love, and love alone, that can repay!
'Tis the answer, 'tis the end and all of living
For it is love alone that rules for aye!
Love, and love alone, the world is seeking,
For 'tis love, and love alone, that can repay!
'Tis the answer, 'tis the end and all of living
For it is love alone that rules for aye...

You remind me of what I read in Freakonomics about backyard pools...

They kill more children under 10 than handguns do - and there are way more handguns in the US than backyard pools. 6 million pools / 200+ million handguns. Yet your child has a 1:11,000 chance of dying in a pool vs. 1:1,000,000+ than dying from a handgun, accidental or deliberate. ,', You should be moar afraid of the pool than the bugs.

Anyhoo, if it weren't for OUR FRIENDS the spiders, we'd be over-run by bugs! Stop killing 'em! The biomass of insects is greater than that of people! There is a precarious balance of power at stake!
