Comment Make it work without JavaScript (Score 1) 69

For a site which has innumerable technical readers who are clued into exploit and privacy issues, you've got a lot of people who prefer running without JavaScript. Not to mention folks who just plain prefer the web without the gimmicks.

Slashdot has worked heretofore without JavaScript, so please make the extra effort to make sure it works without it going forward.

Comment Blame the IT guy (Score 4, Insightful) 140

Just another example of "blame the IT guy".

If it breaks, you don't fire the trader, the lawyer, CEO, VP, whoever. If you lose a billion dollars you don't jail Jon Corzine. If you gamble people's money, you get a golden parachute.

But if you're an IT guy, everything better be perfect, otherwise you'll get fired (lucky) or sent to jail (unlucky).

Comment Android security updates? (Score 1) 81

It seems that most Android manufacturers don't upgrade major versions for their phones (2.3 to 4.x).

That may make sense because the newer versions may relate to features or power the older phones don't have.

But do the manufs/Google at least offer minor upgrades (2.3.x) for security/backport purposes?

It seems that Google offering a patch which would only go into new Samsung phones is about useless.

These are minor details. These are not an inherent part of Google Glass.

If you think they are, let me ask you: If Google Glass were to record for 20 seconds, would you consider it a fundamentally different technology? Of course not, so why are you talking about 10 seconds?

It's 10 seconds today, 10 minutes the next day, and 10 hours the year after that.

The discussion is about total recording, not about the current (perhaps deliberate) shortcomings in Google Glass.

Comment Can't accept a check? (Score 1) 228

The reason the whole thing started is the Salesforce liar (salesman) said he couldn't take a check for for $125K:

My Pillow offered to pay the amount with a company check but Kokoefer said he "could not carry a check in that amount" and asked that payment be made immediately with a credit card, according to filings.

What is that supposed to even mean? I mean, I can imagine not being able to carry $125K in cash, but a check is a check. And if it's made Pay to the Account of Salesforce.com, it's not as if some mugger is going to get a hold of it and cash at the local Bank of America for crying out loud.

What cuts? There are no cuts, merely reductions in the rate of increase. I assume everybody here took calculus and knows about rates of increase.

The only reason the FAA is reducing air service is because the administration wants to apply as much pain as possible to blackmail the public into crying about restoring the "cuts".

This is called the "Firemen First" approach (cut the fire dept so the mayor won't have to cut back on patronage funds or whatever):
