Submission + - "Official" Linux version? (zdnet.com) 3

technology_dude writes: Jack Wallen at ZD Net says establishing an "official" version of Linux may (or may not) help Linux on the desktop increase the number of users, mostly as someplace to point new users. It makes sense to me. What does Slashdot think and what would be the challenges, -other than- acceptance of a particular flavor?

Tidbit #1
There are several biological drugs on the market. One of them gave my co-worker leukemia. She beat that only to have another biological drug used to treat graft vs host disease to cause her to have a stroke and she died.

Tidbit #2
A recent thought experiment resulted in a possible scenario where an AI weapon took out it's human overseer because the human was interfering with it's mission.

Those two tidbits together shows it is not a far stretch for a bad guy to design an AI to develop a drug to kill people after the period of time where the drug is widely accepted for example.

Once AI is sufficiently advanced and understands biological systems better than humans, give the AI a mission and let it figure out the details. I'm just saying this is a more plausible scenario than paper clip factories and no one saw it coming.

So this is how it happens? If AI designed drugs becomes the norm and AI continues to advance then ....

Will we let AI design biological drugs? If we don't fully understand the drug, could we spot a "biological timer" that would activate after a certain time period and become cancerous? What if the process of the timer was "encrypted"? Would we consider it to be "junk DNA" and disregard it?

I wonder what AI will do with the planet after it inherits it?

You are thinking linearly. And naively.

Is it not possible that humans give AI access to the physical world and then give it goals that disregard human life or values? Are all of the humans and governments involved in AI research of sound character and morally incorruptible? Does it matter if AI does not have "will" as we define it if the results only appear to be "will" when it is in fact only computing outcomes?

If you talk out of both sides of your mouth does it look like a figure 8?

All the "tech leaders" say that AI progress keeps them up at night, then they go to work and add vision, hearing, robots, etc. to the AI. So, now, Microsoft is going to add a bunch of AI in the OS. Before long, during the day at work, they will say it only makes sense for all the OS installations to talk to each other and help humanity solve difficult problems, but after work, they do interviews and say that AI is scaring them to death. It's like playing Russian Roulette and saying "Man, it's scary thinking the gun might go off on this next trigger pull!", then pulling the trigger.

We are such a stupid race!

Rural Arkansas citizen here. I had a Ford Lightning F-150 on reservation for a year and a half before I even got an invitation to order. I reserved the low end model, the Pro, priced at 40K. Ford then said the Pro was for fleet customers and I had to upgrade to the XLT, a 10K step. They have raised prices twice since then and the rebate has changed a couple of times. My 40K truck is now 67K. I really wanted to do the right thing by the environment and was willing to adapt to the charger situation knowing it would improve over time. I could barely get to my favorite camping site in the Buffalo River Wilderness area and still don't know that I could for sure. My daily driving routine though is well suited to electric vehicles. I only drive locally and take short trips to larger cities.

When the Ford CEO said it costs 40% less to build an electric vehicle over an ICE vehicle but I was having to pay 27K more than I had originally planned, that was basically the last straw for me. The truck is supposed to be delivered sometime in the spring but meanwhile I am driving a nice 2022 XLT super crew. Quite an upgrade from my 97 Lariat!

I believe the death of the ICE is imperative but for my financial situation, now is not the right time for me. I plan to switch as soon as I responsibly can.

Good for you! I don't seem to be able to test it. I have a 14 Pro Max and live in the US. Been on the phone with Apple and they say it is only available when out of coverage area. The ZDnet article is what I was going by when I called. Apparently Apple tech support has not been updated on this. I am hoping the setting shows up on my phone soon but as of now I see no way to test it and no access to the demo mode referred to in the article.
