Comment So we hate electronics around here now? (Score 2) 372

I can't believe how many comments there are about how the iPad is evil and paper is good. Isn't this a technology site? Do some of you watch Star Trek episodes and get angry that they just don't have paper and pencils since those damn consoles keep exploding every time they get hit by a tachyon burst? Is there that many people opposed to change around here or do you just hate all things apple? If you hate apple, fine, ask why not android. But don't get angry at the FCC and AA for trying to improve efficiency by utilizing technology.

What you are explaining is the main reason some people fear U.S. Government run health care, they already do it for the military and it's a joke. I know you didn't state that you want Government run healthcare but I can see many individuals drawing that conclusion based on your post.

3 Drinks a Day Keeps the Doctor Away 470

Nzimmer911 writes "Heavy drinkers outlive non-drinkers according to a 20 years study following 1,824 people. From the article: 'But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that - for reasons that aren't entirely clear - abstaining from alcohol does actually tend to increase one's risk of dying even when you exclude former drinkers. The most shocking part? Abstainers' mortality rates are higher than those of heavy drinkers.'"

Geek Squad Sends Cease-and-Desist Letter To God Squad 357

An anonymous reader writes "A Wisconsin priest has God on his car but Best Buy's lawyers on his back. Father Luke Strand at the Holy Family Parish in Fond Du Lac says he has received a cease-and-desist letter from the electronics retailer. From the article: 'At issue is Strand's black Volkswagen Beetle with door stickers bearing the name "God Squad" in a logo similar to that of Best Buy's Geek Squad, a group of electronics troubleshooters. Strand told the Fond du Lac Reporter that the car is a creative way to spur discussion and bring his faith to others. Best Buy Co. tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that it appreciates what Strand is trying to do, but it's bad precedent to let groups violate its trademarks.'"

Officials Use Google Earth To Find Unlicensed Pools 650

Officials in Riverhead, New York are using Google Earth to root out the owners of unlicensed pools. So far they've found 250 illegal pools and collected $75,000 in fines and fees. Of course not everyone thinks that a city should be spending time looking at aerial pictures of backyards. from the article: "Lillie Coney, associate director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington, DC, said Google Earth was promoted as an aid to curious travelers but has become a tool for cash-hungry local governments. 'The technology is going so far ahead of what people think is possible, and there is too little discussion about community norms,' she said."

Radioactive Boar On the Rise In Germany 165

Germans who go out in the woods today are sure of a big surprise, radioactive boars. A portion of the wild boar population in Germany was irradiated after the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown, and the boars are thriving. In the last two years government payments to compensate hunters for radioactive boar have quadrupled. From the article: "According to the Environment Ministry in Berlin, almost €425,000 ($555,000) was paid out to hunters in 2009 in compensation for wild boar meat that was too contaminated by radiation to be sold for consumption. That total is more than four times higher than compensation payments made in 2007." I think the Germans are overlooking just how much money there is to be made from regenerating bacon.

I tried to motivate someone I work with to start being a little more healthy so he bought one of those fancy body fat scales. It is rated for 330lbs, it gives an error when he stands on it (he's 5'6"). Despite that he still shows up to work everyday with McDonalds in hand and might eat there for lunch as well. I think we should implement no taxes on healthy foods (fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fish, fungus, juices/water). Small tax on white and dark meat. Heavy tax on red meat, fried foods, snacks (chips, hot pockets, etc.), sweets (ice cream, Twinkies, candy, etc.). That tax money should go to paying for the damage caused by the fatties. I'm generally opposed to the government banning certain products we buy but I'm fine with representative taxation on "SIN" items.

So the U.S., by their own ambitions, more than doubled the 9/11 death count with their own soldiers and they still haven't brought the man behind the heinous act to justice. I'm not even going to bring up civilian casuatlies as that would just bring me to tears.
