The problem is with Apple trying to assert control over how people use their product after they've sold it.
This is the problem that Apple (Steve) sees with open platforms. When something is open, people will be stupid enough to screw up all the work they put in to make the device perfect. He doesn't want that happening.

Something did get done. Look at the graph of BP stock. Zoom to 1 year and notice the huge dip following april 20th. They (and their stockholders) did lose money over this...

Apple has pretty well innoculated themselves with a strong tablet (touch) and ultralight notebook (full OS) offerings.
If this comes with net access it will pretty much eat up the remaining netbook fervor.
You say that like those are the only kinds of devices people want.
So why not just leave it that way if you can save resources?
Because humans aren't interested in saving resources until they run out.
Any program which runs right is obsolete.
