Comment Re:Fresh Air and Sunshine? (Score 1) 73

Does oil rolls out of the ground ready for use in cars? Nope. There is a tremendous industry not only around drilling, but transporting and refining petroleum products. Ironically, there is discrete and distinct electrical cost at every step of the cycle to process oil into your SUV's fuel tank, perhaps not enough to power an EV the full distance, but surely measurable at least. Natural gas will likely backfill most of the electric grid top capacity for now, but solar is getting better quickly.

While my Ford Mustang Mach-e loves my lead foot a little too much, I rarely have range anxiety, but then only because the charging network really sucks (for now). So like the early car enthusiasts, my trips sometimes take a little more planning, much like the historical use of the Michelin Guide, only this time it's more of an app. Three quarters (75%) of all crude oil is used as fuels for trucks, airplanes, boats and mainly cars. As EV adoption continues, reduction in demand for gasoline will likely reduce new drilling and infrastructure. Reduction in scale will likely lead to surplus if it happens fairly quickly and I think it will. Beyond trying another foolishly thrilling Cannonball Run, I can't imagine any reason why a reasonable well planned trip won't soon (is now for Tesla owners) always be better using a quite, calm efficiently powerful electric car

Likely that's the underlying reason why they could do it, but the Webb telescope is pretty single threaded. Surely it cannot be as easily directed to immediate needs of more modest scientific objectives. We should be building a small fleet of space telescopes at several lagrange points (moon, mars, jupiter?), if only to have as communications relays and survanace of commercial space traffic.

Trump's Big Lie is simply virtue signaling for a GOP dictatorship and that insurrection was pushed though twitter as part of his campaign against losing the election fairly. At the time it was important, but now not so critical. People need to be banned for safety of others when they call for violence, but permanent bans assume people can't change or be diminished.

Once BEV overtake ICE cars in sales, there will be fewer gas stations, to the point where they become as uncommon as fast charging stations are today.

What's more is that the physical properties of gasoline doesn't lead to easy storage or transportation of the product. It's only 'cheap' right now because there is a huge infrastructure which needs continual investment and upkeep. Every gas station you see effectively has a 20 year timer on the underground tanks fuel pipes and pumps, few of them will be replaced, especially out in rural areas (save for diesel for a while). The economies of scale can produce odd market effects when there is a quick and permanent drawdown of a industry.

You are correct on the about the notably poor performance of tanks in the Yom Kippur war, but the fix found in the era was reactive armor, RPG cage retrofits for APCs and better tank design (keeping munitions out of the crew area). Both the Javelins and NLAWs have multistage warheads to blow through countermeasures and impact ballistically to reduce glancing blows. I think the next iteration of tanks will be smaller and unmanned.
