Submission + - Big Brother: Satellites Spy Black Friday Shoppers (hothardware.com)

MojoKid writes: "Those satellites in space don't just take spy pictures. On this Black Friday 2010, they actually took pictures of you, and your rush to Black Friday shopping deals. The research is being done to see what consumer demand this year means for retail stocks. The trend, so far, has been favorable. The companies involved in this are Remote Sensing Metrics and Digital Globe. Remote Sensing Metrics is a Chicago-based consulting firm that analyzes the satellite imagery. In turn, it purchases those images from Colorado-based company Digital Globe, which operates its own satellites."

Submission + - DHS Seizes 75+ Domain Names (torrentfreak.com) 2

PatPending writes: FTFA: The investigative arm of the Homeland Security Department appears to be shutting down websites that facilitate copyright infringement. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has seized dozens of domain names over the past few days, according to TorrentFreak. ICE appears to be targeting sites that help Internet users download copyrighted music, as well as sites that sell bootleg goods, such as fake designer handbags. The sites are replaced with a note from the government: "This domain named has been seized by ICE, Homeland Security Investigations."

Submission + - How to get back into software development 3

luv2sled writes: I have a CS degree and about 5 years of software development (mostly in Java and UI development). Unfortunately, it's been a few years since I've used any of these skills. For the last 7 years, I have been working in Product Management/Development. I have found this work to be less than satisfying and would like to move back to software development. Any suggestions on how to make this transition?

Submission + - Google, Microsoft Cheat on Slow-Start. Should You? (benstrong.com) 1

kdawson writes: Software developer and blogger Ben Strong did a little exploring to find out how Google achieves its admirably fast load times. What he discovered is that Google, and to a much greater extent Microsoft, are cheating on the 'slow-start' requirement of RFC-3390. His research indicates that discussion of this practice on the Net is at an early, and somewhat theoretical, stage.Strong concludes with this question: 'What should I do in my app (and what should you do in yours)? Join the arms race or sit on the sidelines and let Google have all the page-load glory?'

Submission + - New MacBook Pros to sport Light Peak technology (edibleapple.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Over the past few years, Apple has systematically upgraded the base level MacBook to a level where the difference between the Pro and consumer models were arguably becoming negligible. That's about to change. Apple will reportedly introduce a completely re-designed MacBook Pro this April that will borrow features from the recently released MacBook Air. The new Pros will reportedly come with an SSD drive and Light Peak technology, a transfer protocol capable of 10 Gbps both up and down. Light Peak, jointly developed by Intel and Apple, will reportedly be an Apple exclusive at first

Submission + - User-generated pixel TV (pixelbuzz.tv)

outfoxer writes: Modern films and television are usually multi-million dollar budgets, scandals, celebrities and crazy special effects. In PixelBuzz.tv everything is the other way round. At our disposal we have only 8 colors, 4 frames and a limited set of pixels. Everyone can become a director, make his own pixel movie and send it to a common channel. All movies are mixed and given randomly to the audience.

You can view the movies either on PixelBuzz.tv site or in screensaver or you can embed our TV widget to your website or blog (iGoogle widget is also available). Each movie has its permanent address so that, if desired, your creation can be easily shared with your friends. Movies can be added without registration, but they are moderated.

Submission + - Pirate Bay trio lose appeal (pcpro.co.uk)

nk497 writes: Three of the founders of The Pirate Bay have lost an appeal against their conviction last year of helping to share copyright material. It wasn't a total waste of time, however. Three of the foursome have had their one-year jail sentences cut to between four and ten months. (The fourth was too ill to appear in court, and will appeal separately.) The foursome also had their fine bumped from 32 million kronor to 46 million kronor.

Submission + - U.S Government Seizes Torrent Search Engine Domain (torrentfreak.com)

Voulnet writes: This morning, visitors to the Torrent-Finder.com site are greeted with an ominous graphic which indicates that ICE have seized the site’s domain.
“My domain has been seized without any previous complaint or notice from any court!” the exasperated owner of Torrent-Finder told TorrentFreak this morning.

“I firstly had DNS downtime. While I was contacting GoDaddy I noticed the DNS had changed. Godaddy had no idea what was going on and until now they do not understand the situation and they say it was totally from ICANN,” he explained.

Aside from the fact that domains are being seized seemingly at will, there is a very serious problem with the action against Torrent-Finder. Not only does the site not host or even link to any torrents whatsoever, it actually only returns searches through embedded iframes which display other sites that are not under the control of the Torrent-Finder owner.

Kids are going to have sex. That's the long and short of it. Would you rather that they do it not knowing how to be safe and responsible? Or would you rather that they have the knowledge of how to use contraceptives to reduce the risk of pregnancy and STDs? We teach kids how to do everything else safely, but we think, "Well, kids shouldn't be having sex anyway, so if we don't tell them about it, they won't do it." Hogwash.

The trouble is you're running a G4. I have a C2D mac mini (GMA 950 graphics, no less) and I get ~30 fps even on all of those examples (except for SVG, because SVG sucks.) You're surprised that a new technology runs badly on a computer that's somewhere between four and seven years old? I'm sorry if your computer doesn't do HTML5 as well as a newer computer does, but that doesn't make it a pile of crap all around. We shouldn't be locked into proprietary Flash, Silverlight, or anything just because a four-generation-old Mac can't run the new, promising stuff.

Study Shows TV Makes Kids Fat, Computers Don't 276

Xemu writes "Computers don't make children fat, but watching TV for the same length of time does. This is shown by a recent Swedish study of all school children in Lund's county conducted by RN Pernilla Garmy. The results were clear: The child's obesity was directly affected by placing a TV in the child's room, but placing a computer in the room had no effect at all. One theory is that it's common to have a snack in front of the TV, while a computer requires a more active user, for example when chatting or playing games."
