The sick part is this is what you see. They want all this experience and pay nothing. I don't know about everyone else but getting degrees and certifications "cost" money to obtain. When the IT guys (myself included) stop selling ourselves short then the market will change. The problem is they starve some out and they will take a job they are overqualified for and get paid peanuts then the rest of the industry thinks this should be the norm. I have been in IT for over 10 years and this trend has not changed. At least not in the midwest. I see more jobs with temp to hire, wanting all these certifications and experience but the pay doesn't match. Go in the interview and if you ask for "proper compensation consideration" and you know you won't get the job because they mark you as greedy. In this job climate this is what you are going to see. It is an employers market. With over 10% out of work this is the way they want it.

That is what they are. Educated guesses. The scientist gets some information and builds a consensus on a rough time frame. They could be off by a million years but close enough when you are talking billion years. Carbon dating probably couldn't work either because of the differences in atmosphere. It would be cool to send humans to Mars to say we did it and bring back tangible proof like we did for the moon in the 60's. NASA has been wasting alot of money on the shuttle these days and needs to get the next vehicle ready now. Relying on the Russians to transit to and from the ISS is inexcusable for this country. Then on to the moon and build a station on the moon. At first unmanned but eventually setup to be manned like we currently do with the ISS. The only issues would be meteor strikes or significant failure that would prevent astronauts from escaping if there was a life threatening issue.

There was a guard there according to the article. Until it is figured out how to prevent this kind of stuff, this will happen. However to say that is not worth it. Living In Tokyo's Capsule Hotels 269

afabbro writes "Capsule Hotel Shinjuku 510 once offered a night’s refuge to salarymen who had missed the last train home. Now with Japan enduring its worst recession since World War II, it is becoming an affordable option for people with nowhere else to go. The Hotel 510’s capsules are only 6 1/2 feet long by 5 feet wide. Guests must keep possessions, like shirts and shaving cream, in lockers outside of the capsules. Atsushi Nakanishi, jobless since Christmas says, 'It’s just a place to crawl into and sleep. You get used to it.'”

Fixing Security Issue Isn't Always the Right Answer 361

Trailrunner7 writes "In a column on Threatpost, Bruce Schneier writes that the recent security breach at Newark Airport shows that fixing a given security problem isn't always the right move. 'An unidentified man breached airport security at Newark Airport on Sunday, walking into the secured area through the exit, prompting an evacuation of a terminal and flight delays that continued into the next day. This problem isn't common, but it happens regularly. The result is always the same, and it's not obvious that fixing the problem is the right solution. American airports can do more to secure against this risk, but I'm reasonably sure it's not worth it. We could double the guards to reduce the risk of inattentiveness, and redesign the airports to make this kind of thing less likely, but that's an expensive solution to an already rare problem. As much as I don't like saying it, the smartest thing is probably to live with this occasional but major inconvenience.'"

Mars Images Reveal Evidence of Ancient Lakes 128

Matt_dk writes "Spectacular satellite images suggest that Mars was warm enough to sustain lakes three billion years ago, a period that was previously thought to be too cold and arid to sustain water on the surface, according to research published today in the journal Geology. Earlier research had suggested that Mars had a warm and wet early history but that between 4 billion and 3.8 billion years ago, before the Hesperian Epoch, the planet lost most of its atmosphere and became cold and dry. In the new study, the researchers analysed detailed images from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which is currently circling the red planet, and concluded that there were later episodes where Mars experienced warm and wet periods."

Apple will really make market share when they don't overcharge for their hardware. I don't care that it is spec'd for their OS. The same spec in a PC is substantially cheaper in most cases. When Apple gets more market share and the virus writers start targeting their OS like they do Windows they will see that there not as secure as they thought. Windows still has some work in the security department obviously but it is improving. What it really comes down to with people is cost. When a person walks into Best Buy and can get a pretty powerful PC for less then the entry level Apple they will go that route. Money versus performance. If Apple competitively priced their systems against a PC the market share would shift alot quicker. The next decade will decide if Microsoft endures or falls even further or if Linux and/or Apple take over. I would put money on Microsoft that they will still hold the market share based alone on the server OS. I work in software that is supported (business application) that runs on various platforms. One platform that we don't support is Apple. Why? Not in demand for communications software for major business. Mostly windows, then Linux/Unix and then AS/400.
