Comment Hmm (Score 4, Insightful) 54

Public discourse on how we should regulate social media is so misguided because not enough people understand the inner workings of these algorithms. The government needs to regulate, or straight up ban, personalization algorithms in social media. These algorithms are constantly A/B testing and going with the results that drive more engagement from the user. Monetizing outrage is exploiting a vulnerability of human nature for profit. No different than the opioid crisis.

Comment I was neither for nor against UBI (Score 1) 360

I couldn't support UBI nor could I say it would fail because no country has adopted it. Small experiments here or there, but not substantial enough to glean any kind of conclusion. Lately because of pandemic relief (namely in unemployment benefits, not the stimulus checks) I've noticed that there is a huge supply of jobs but not enough demand. Basically, people who have been reaping the benefits of unemployment are straight up not looking for jobs. They'll wait until it runs out first before looking. With that said, the concern with UBI was that "what if someone is just content being given a living wage and never looks for a job" has become a large glint on my radar. It's quite evident that an even larger part of society would do this. Guaranteed income does not seem to make the issue any better.

Comment Haven't cared for a while, and here's why... (Score 1) 20

As someone who would tune and watch for Nintendo events but didn't really care for XBox and Playstation, I stopped caring when Nintendo just issued virtual Directs instead. Nintendo went virtual before everyone else and people stopped caring. I imagine it will be similar for the other platforms.

"Misinformation" is largely in the eye of the beholder.

That's just it. It's not. There is one side that is very blatantly clinging to fringe media outlets and "personalizing" their news experience around a certain narrative. Before, we at least were all on the same page and could argue policy. This last election cycle we were arguing reality. That's like saying censorship is in the eye of the beholder.
