Comment Tatooine (Tunisia) (Score 1) 210

I visited the caves in Tunisia that were used whilst filming Star Wars and they seemed ideal for the environment. Cool, private and comfortable would suit me just fine. Relocate it to Canada and shovelling snow would be an appalling prospect but a more appropriate underground dwelling still has plenty of advantages year round.

"Evening Moosefuckers; I'll tell you what I hate about Canada. Half of you speak French and the other half let them." Jerry Sadowitz moments before being punched in the face by an audience member.

In all seriousness though since I moved to Canada nearly a decade ago I am extremely grateful to the Quebec voters during the last election and their positive influences to Canadian culture overall. Most detractors appear quite self centred to me and only able to focus on what other groups are receiving. I often hear the same views with regard aboriginal people and in the UK there was the same attitude towards European immigrants. It used to drive me mad when people complained blamed immigrants for their inability to get a job. I felt privileged to have the right to work in any EU country that took my fancy and if your too lazy and ignorant to appreciate that right I'd suggest that is a more significant reason for your unemployment.

Microsoft To Offer Flight For Free This Spring 241

hypnosec writes "Microsoft's Flight Simulator series, which was in dormant state until now, will see a re-launch this spring and that too for free. The name of this series will be simply Flight, and players will have free access to the digital sky with this simulator. In other words, it will be available as a free download; however, the user would need to buy additional content to enhance their experience. The content that can be purchased includes aircraft as well as new environments. Microsoft states that the most amazing part of this game is the user can experience some real life locations like Big Island of Hawaii along with 'region-specific weather patterns, foliage, terrain and landmarks.'" [Video demo here.] I'd like to know where the ESRB finds "crude humor" or "mild violence" in there.

A few years ago a yacht crew took photos of a volcanic island rising out of the sea. http://yacht-maiken.blogspot.com/2006/08/stone-sea-and-volcano.html

I was about to go on a sailing trip when I saw the photos and although there was no chance of seeing something similar in the Mediterranean it did get me excited about the amazing things you can see on our planet.

Comment "Intellectual property" is a silly euphemism (Score 1) 506

The term 'Intellectual property' was adopted as a more sympathetic term by the World Intellectual Property Organization in the 60's to replace the previously used phrase "industrial entities who've had the contours of their regulatory monopolies violated".

There are a number of good articles by Cory Doctrow on intellectual property and digital information in general but basically he argues that we have to recognise the differences between knowledge and property or face 'an endless war between intractable positions of ownership, theft and fair dealing.'
