I don't know. Over the course of several days, Dave tried to very politely extract information from an increasingly unhelpful Christophoro. In the end, he triggered the Streissand-bomb. I'm willing to forgive a little bit of textual trollface, after what Christophoro pulled. Plus, Christophoro's further antics show he learned nothing, and would have carried on had it not been for the massive backlash from some very important people in the industry.

"Why is it that software patents specifically should be abolished?"

Because in order to hold a software patent, you're not required to actually have engineered an actual product.

Not to mention that the "products" in question are essentially applied mathematical formulae, and a software patent punishes developers who happen upon the same formula.

Submission + - Siri Hack Lets You Start, Stop & Lock Cars (gizmocrazed.com)

Diggester writes: "Not only has siri been successful in attracting customers towards the five week old iPhone 4S but hackers are getting their business out of it as well having their eyes on endless range of possibilities.

While some tried and were successful in hooking up siri to their Viper car remote, one of the perceptive minds have taken up this idea to turn his vehicle on and off by using voice commands through Siri."

Submission + - Wing Commander Saga About to Launch (wcsaga.com)

An anonymous reader writes: I am one of the developers of Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn (http://www.wcsaga.com/), a free, standalone total conversion project for PC and MAC based on the Freespace 2 Source Code project. Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn has been in development for the last decade. We are nearly finished with it and are preparing for a full release in the immediate future, and we are looking for ways to raise awareness of the game. As I said, this is a free game. No one will make money off of it; it is purely a labor of love.

You can check out some trailers with in-game footage and samples of our cut scenes at the following links.

In 1990, Chris Roberts and his team of innovative developers at Origin
Systems released a game called Wing Commander. Thus was born a
franchise that has ignited the imagination of people all over the
world and has become the gold standard for space combat simulations.
Even now, 21 years after its initial release, Wing Commander has one
of the most active fan communities on the internet. Recently, several
of the Wing Commander games have been re-released at gog.com. Wing
Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn, is our team’s homage to the
compelling Wing Commander universe and the talented individuals who
created it.

Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn takes place during the time of
Wing Commander 3. It is a time of desperation and despair. Still
reeling from the ghastly toll of the Battle of Terra, humanity finds
itself pushed closer and closer to the brink of extinction at the
hands and claws of the savage Kilrathi Empire. The Confederation is
trapped in a seemingly endless cycle of defeats, and hope is slipping
away. Already, the Kilrathi are making their final preparations to
finish off humanity once and for all.

The end, it seems, is near.

In this setting, human drama is at its most extreme intensity. Hope,
fear, desperation, courage, camaraderie, and loss are part of the
daily struggle for the people who refuse to stop fighting, even in the
face of seemingly inevitable defeat. This is humanity’s greatest
struggle, its defining moment. This is the Wing Commander Saga.

Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn, features:

Over 11,000 lines of dialogue, resulting in over nine hours full voice acting.
Approximately 70 cut scenes for a total of about 90 minutes of
pre-rendered footage (not counting in-flight communications and
command briefings).
Over 60 voice actors, some of whom are actual professionals.
              221 voice acting roles.
              55 missions.
Achievements (mission performance is evaluated and rewarded)
              90 models created for Saga.
Download size of 3-4GB with an installation size of 8-9 GB

Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn has been in development since
2001. A small core group of developers and a number of auxiliary
contributors have worked on developing Saga for the last decade, and
during that time it has undergone an extensive process of evolution,
from a modification to Conquest: Frontier Wars to a simple
modification for Freespace 2 to a standalone total conversion of the
most up-to-date Freespace 2 Source Code Project. The long wait is
nearly over. Prepare yourself to enter the cockpit as Lt. David
“Sandman” Markham. Join with your wingmen, meet the Kilrathi foe face
to face in the cold battlefield of space. It’s a no-holds-barred fight
for the survival of humanity. Are you ready?

Sincerely,

Ryan Anderson

Submission + - Palantir, the War on Terror's Secret Weapon (businessweek.com)

hessian writes: "None of Fikri’s individual actions would raise suspicions. Lots of people rent trucks or have relations in Syria, and no doubt there are harmless eccentrics out there fascinated by amusement park infrastructure. Taken together, though, they suggested that Fikri was up to something. And yet, until about four years ago, his pre-attack prep work would have gone unnoticed. A CIA analyst might have flagged the plane ticket purchase; an FBI agent might have seen the bank transfers. But there was nothing to connect the two. Lucky for counterterror agents, not to mention tourists in Orlando, the government now has software made by Palantir Technologies, a Silicon Valley company that’s become the darling of the intelligence and law enforcement communities.

The day Fikri drives to Orlando, he gets a speeding ticket, which triggers an alert in the CIA’s Palantir system. An analyst types Fikri’s name into a search box and up pops a wealth of information pulled from every database at the government’s disposal. There’s fingerprint and DNA evidence for Fikri gathered by a CIA operative in Cairo; video of him going to an ATM in Miami; shots of his rental truck’s license plate at a tollbooth; phone records; and a map pinpointing his movements across the globe. All this information is then displayed on a clearly designed graphical interface that looks like something Tom Cruise would use in a Mission: Impossible movie."

I keep Windows 7 on my laptop, so I can test IE natively. My wife occasionally borrows it to watch Netflix in bed. Other than that, her desktop is a Mac, and mine is Ubuntu. My netbook, I'm using to mess around with FreeBSD, and we also have an old laptop that runs Ubuntu as well.

If I can't run Skyrim through Wine, I guess I'll be doing some gaming on the Windows laptop, but other than occasional use like this, I've been either Windows-free or using Windows alongside GNU/Linux for the past seven years or so.
