CoolHandLuke writes: NEC and Hitachi are teaming up on a liquid cooling system for hard drives. The goal is to cut down on noise levels while providing more efficient cooling. 'Hitachi and NEC are developing the water-cooled hard drive systems for desktop computers mainly to reduce noise levels to 25 decibels, 5 decibels quieter than a whisper. To do this, NEC and Hitachi actually wrap the hard drive in "noise absorbing material and vibration insulation." According to Hitachi and NEC, the cooling cold plate they're planning to use is the most efficient plate ever used for heat conduction, which means they'll be able to cool the hard drives quicker and more efficiently.'

ramboando writes: "Acer, the third-largest PC manufacturer worldwide, won't commit to pre-installing Linux on its line-up, except in 'certain circumstances', despite hinting that it would do so in the UK.

The apparent green light in the UK is an about face from earlier this week, when an Acer spokesperson told ZDNet UK it wouldn't offer Ubuntu as an option due to a lack of demand.

However, spokespersons in the US and Australia have both confirmed that there are no plans to offer Linux as a pre-installed option.

Resellers in Singapore have started selling Ubuntu on the Acer Aspire 5710Z laptop."

The most interesting item I found in the notes is that the file manager in KDE is being separated from Konqueror into a component called Dolphin. Also, according to the announcement, konsole has been treated to a number of improvements such as split view, and history highlighting."
