Comment The life of RRi (Score 1) 246

My Raspberry pi has done a few things: It started off as a cheap server (running stripped down debian - essentially for eggdrop and ssh tunneling). replaced it with an old desktop for stability.

Then it had a brief stint as a pbx with asterisks, it was buggy and was overkill for my purposes. I learnt how to set up asterisks, though - no mean feat.

It's currently acting as a media centre (with openELEC) but as i hardly use it (again, randomly freezes, lags) i'll soon replace it with a mini PC of some kind.

Next i'll either hook it up to a surveillance camera and make it stream video (or upload snapshots) over the internet or use the gpio pins and hook it up to some transducers and see what ideas i come up with.

The RPi is cheap, it has a lot of projects revolving around it, it's buggy as hell, its essentially only good for fleshing out ideas until i can justify (or not justify) buying nicer hardware (for me at least).

Continue using Android. It's an acceptable OS (I use it). Accept that if you want to use Android, they're going to want you to use their other services. It's not google's fault it has shitty competition. There is also WP8.

No, you have a Google account. Google is requiring certain users who already have a Google account to add a Google+ profile to their Google account and associate all activity on their Google account with their Google+ profile.

yes, yes they are. I don't care. I have a Google+ account (and like it). They are also giving people with Google+ page preferential search results. I also don't care, google can do what it wants. I don't care if google is playing dirty, i don't expect better. No one is forcing me to use any of their services. I choose to use them. I also don't post anything particularity private or embarrassing. Google is not my friend (and that's OK). They will eventually force everyone to use G+ (guess what, i don't care).

The point of my post, which you seem to have taken as criticizing Google (presumably because it wasn't fawning with devotion) was to tell people to get a G+ account and stop whining or stop using feedly and Google.

I use twitter everyday (essentially as a simplified rss reader) and i like it. The user-name i have is not the one i wanted, I have three user-names i use regularly, all were taken. All three of those accounts haven't tweeted anything in years and they've all only tweeted less than 10 times.

These accounts are still regarded as active - despite a policy of removing inactive accounts after a (unspecified) period. There are thee options: 1) these people install the twitter app on their phone, sign in and never open it again (but it runs in the background), 2) these people only use twitter's OAuth functionality to sign into other sites, or 3) twitter just doesn't delete inactive accounts.

Having said that, there is nothing particularly wrong (in a technical sense) with the surface devices other than people don't seem to want them.

I like the metro interface for a tablet, it's a good idea. There's the problem of apps though, people with Android/iOS specific apps simply won't/can't migrate, all MS can do is push devs to port the top 100 apps people use and hope to win by attrition. MS Office/Outlook and all the MS Enterprise services compatibility on a tablet is a big hook for a lot of people too..

They are a little expensive for the underdog product. They need to sell these devices at close to cost, flood the market and then slowly hike up the prices once they've killed off competition with lock-ins. There was a time when MS would do this instinctively.

The OP is using a WM because it's reminiscent to the WM of a dead OS he liked from the early 90s.

If developers do anything more than maintenance work on the code, it's going to be less and less like his beloved, "Presentation Manager" and more like a modern WM, giving him less and less incentive to actually stay with IceWM. So what exactly does he want? He seems to be sticking to IceWM out of habit, perhaps he should look around at other WMs and not limit himself.

When i was running Linux I used IceWM+PCmanFM for desktop icons, It's a fine for what it is, a loose imitation of the classic windows UIs. Like all cloneware, there comes a time when interest wanes, and the code is deemed "done".

Man-O-Man do the Ubuntu fanboys annoy me. Canonical never really expected the fundraiser to succeed? This was all a marketing exercise? Come on, you'll give yourself a lot more credibility if you just admit this was a dismal failure.

They like to mention the fact that the Ubuntu Edge campaign holds a record for most pledges, but It holds the record for the largest unsuccessfully funded project too.

Linux users are cheap, there is no money to be made from them. The top selling app in Ubuntu App store has dozens of sales.

Also, lets not forget Canonical is a for-profit company. It's a bit pathetic for it to have to crowd source funding.

MS has no incentive to screw with Google. It knows Google is very alert and capable of fighting back.

The theory that MS is deliberately messing with youtube ads is preposterous. MS needs a working youtube app for windows phone. MS knows very well that if they do anything nefarious google will simply block the app. Google has zero incentive to help MS build a youtube app, they're dragging their feet and likely acting because of the possibility of DoJ action.

Here's an idea: Google sees Windows Phone as its only long term competitor, unlike iOS (which will always be limited by Apple's insistence on hardware control), WP8 can be licensed by any hardware manufacturer. WP8 might be a small competitor but it's its only competitor. All the other OSs are either for feature phones or don't have any commercial backing. WP8 is a decent phone OS, its largest problem is the lack of apps.

If you think the BBC is really a "service" for the benefit of humanity, you're a fool, the UK would be foolish not to use it as a propaganda arm and if you listen to it as often as i do (In English, French and Arabic), you'll detect certain biases (such as a lack of local British coverage over Assange and the London Riots). Although the English Arm is definitely of better quality.

I don't think it's possible for any media to be unbiased, they all have owners with opinions (who can at least set the tone). I'm glad RT freely admits it's agenda.Caveat emptor.

There is a certain type of kernel programmer who is not particularly emotionally intelligent or socially lucid (but super smart). Telling that type of programmer "That's a interesting way of doing it, but....." or that "your code needs improving" may not register as as "No" and will lead to a lot of wasted effort.

Linus appears to use abrasive language as a crutch and as a way to reduced the numbers of words he has to write. I doubt he has actual anger problems (not that i know him). It's just a technique.
