Comment Re:Macey's Parade (Score 1) 475

While watching the Macey's Parade last year, they mentioned that the parade balloons (big charlie brown, etc) makes it the single largest helium user in the US (maybe world?) next to the US Government.

Interesting stuff.

But when it comes to comparison in hot air, the US Government still beats out the balloons for consumption.

Reading Slashdot comments on subjects like this reminds me of a moment in my ancient history that always sticks in my mind. My middle school (Junior High back then, 7th/8th grades) had a special program for students that showed exceptional skills. It was called Mentorship. It was basically designed to give us advanced classes while at the same time encouraging us to tutor others. Students from other classes could come to the Mentorship teachers and ask for a tutor and they in turn would get a volunteer from the Mentorship class to help.

After turning in a writing assignment where we had to create a crime/detective story the teacher was so proud of us that she said this (a little paraphrased, it was 25-odd years ago..)

"You are all so brilliant, every one of you got an A- or better on this paper. I see bright things in your futures. Some of the stories were so clever that I hope none of you ever grow up and get into a life of crime. Any one of you that did would be criminal masterminds and a scourge on this world. I'm sure none of you would do that, but it would be rather scary if you did."

Of course to me all I heard was, "You could be a great criminal genius, go for it!"

But reading through all of your comments makes me realize... there are many (note: I say many, not all) of you that, were you to put your minds to crime, would make the papers pretty quickly, and not in the "got caught doing..." way, I mean in the "is being sought by..." way.

And in 2012 the economy is still going to suck, if it's not worse, so you probably could run Hitler's ghost against Obama with a hope to win.

Although they'd have lot more luck with someone like Scott Brown, he seems to have everyone in Mass. wrapped around his finger... just a regular guy with a truck! (and what, a half dozen houses/summer homes, yeah, just like the rest of us).

Comment So... eSATA-based thumbdrives? (Score 1) 222

That's what popped into my head, anyway... but after reading the article, the sizes are only about what you'd find on a USB thumb drive these days, anyway. Although I'm guessing the potential for higher sizes is more on the iSSD side of things.

But it did make me think of something else that might be interesting: What if we saw a complete convergence of USB and SATA? Don't look at me like that, why not? Imagine, instead 2-6 9/1-pin USB connectors on your mobo and 4-8 SATA connectors... just 4-6 USATA connectors, you can connect whatever you want to them, internally or externally.

I'm no engineer, but it doesn't sound like it should be all that far fetched.

I don't know what Bioware's up to, but I think Steam is different... since you're buying the game from them and getting it download-only, setting up an account is less invasive, since you had to do it to make the purchase to begin with. GFWL games require you to setup an account and login every time you play for a game you purchased in a box at the store. To that I disagree wholeheartedly. If I buy something at the store it's mine and unless it's something like WoW, I do not want to have to sign up with anything when I get home with it, I just want to jump in and play. If the game offers online gameplay against friends, then the worst I would hope I'd have to do is create a username. That's all.

On the other hand, does GFWL not allow an auto-login feature? When I double click a Steam-based game icon I get a brief, "Logging you in" screen and then on with the game. Unless I'm not online in which case it's not as brief and eventually changes to, "You are offline, loading the game anyway, 'cause we love you like that" screen. Which is ok, as long as it gets into the game.
