Submission + - Intel Core 2 "Penryn" and Linux (linuxhardware.org)

LHoAugustus writes: "Linux Hardware has posted a look at the new Intel "Penryn" processor and how the new processor will work with Linux. "Intel recently released the new "Penryn" Core 2 processor with many new features. So what are these features and how will they equate into benefits to Linux users? That's what Linux Hardware is here to unravel. In this review I'll cover all the high points of the new "Penryn" core and talk to a couple Linux projects about the impact on end-user performance.""

Submission + - First look: Firefox 3 visual refresh for Linux (arstechnica.com)

ohrmazd writes: Firefox 3 is getting a visual refresh for better integration with Mac OS X and Windows, but original plans called for Linux to be left out of the fun. That decision was reversed and Ars has a look at some of the new themes. 'A patch submitted by Michael Ventnor makes the Firefox 3 toolbar use stock GTK icons from the user's GNOME icon theme. We tested this feature extensively and found that it worked very well with Tango, the default GNOME icon theme, Ubuntu's Human icon theme, and a variety of other popular third-party icon themes downloaded from gnome-look.org.' So far, it looks very promising.

Submission + - Comedic Anti-Spam site with short mockumentaries (livespamfree.org)

An anonymous reader writes: As of Monday, November 12th, 2007, www.livespamfree.org went live in a bid to unite spam fighters everywhere — so they can share their stories of spam fighting heroism and horror, view "documentary" footage inside the world's only De-Spamification facility, and enjoy some much needed down-time with an exclusive spam-blasting game. Beginning Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the television watching public will be able to get an intimate glimpse inside the private life of a spam-fighter's family when a 30-second TV spot airs nationally on the Sci-Fi Channel. That footage, as well as two additional creative spots are currently available for viewing on the website. In a spot set in the De-Spamification facility, the psychology counselor explains: "Fighting spam changes a person... Day in, day out...the disgusting offers, the outrageous promises. It can, you know, get under your skin. You gotta pull these guys off the front lines for some R & R, you know, try to get them to talk about it..." You can also submit your info for a free Live Spam Free bracelet. Fight on Brave Spam Fighter!

Submission + - NASA and FAA Encourage Aviation Careers

gilgsn writes: "Planenews.com has a press release about NASA and the FAA signing a memorandum to foster the development of students' skills in science, technology, engineering and math. The agreement, although emphasizing the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research, seems more like an attempt at recruiting air traffic controllers. I wonder if it is related to the FAA's new tax program.."

Submission + - Easter (Egg) Holiday

updog writes: "With Easter just around the corner, what better way for a Slashdotter to celebrate than finding his or her own Easter Egg?

While many people have seen the classic Excel Flight Simulator, there are over 10,000 other Easter Eggs found in DVD's, books, and music — for example, there are over 8 eggs on the Futurama DVD; and some hidden Emoticons in Skype.

What are some of the readers' favorite Easter Eggs?"

Submission + - UK Government Rejects Anti-DRM e-Petition

Anonymous Coward writes: "The UK government has rejected an e-Petition calling for a ban on DRM. In a response posted to the e-Petitions site, they claim that DRM gives users "unprecedented choice". BBC News reports on the response: "It said DRM acted as a policeman in that it protected digital content, but, it added, the technology also improved choice and the price consumers wished to pay." The response did, however, recognise that "the needs and rights of consumers must also be carefully safeguarded.""

Submission + - How to Laser Tag (i.e. graffiti) a Building

John3 writes: "The Graffiti Research Lab has posted video of laser graffiti they created on a Rotterdam building. The effect is very cool, and a complete guide on how they did it is posted on Theodore Watson's website. All you need is a laptop, LCD projector, and laser and you too can graffiti buildings without any permanent damage (unless you fry the retinas of a curious late night janitor). The GRL site states they are "dedicated to outfitting graffiti artists with open source technologies for urban communication" and there are several other examples of previous high-tech graffiti experiments, including drive-in GIF theater."

Microsoft Apologizes for Serving Malware 171

dark_15 writes "Microsoft has apologized for serving malware via its websites and Windows Live Messenger software. APC reader Jackie Murphy reported the problem: 'With Microsoft launching Vista along with their Defender software to protect users from viruses and spyware, it seems therefore to be an oxymoron that they have started to putting paid changing banner advertisements for malware, on the popular MSN groups servers.'"

Consumer Vista Upgrades Moving at Snail's Pace 269

Chester Freeze writes "During the holiday season, many shoppers bought PCs with the promise of quick, free Vista upgrades. The reality has been something else entirely: many Dell and HP customers are being told that they won't receive their copies of Vista before April. 'One source at a major OEM who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the real issue is that OEMs are still not sure which PCs are really ready to support Vista, and which PCs aren't... Customers who qualify for an Express Upgrade also qualify for OEM support for Windows Vista, even if their machines came with Windows XP. The last thing a Dell, Gateway, or HP wants to do is start sending out upgrades to customers who might have video cards that do not have particularly stable drivers yet (or sound cards, or RAID controllers, etc.). This could be a support disaster.'"

Submission + - Norway to censor internet more than China?

nickull writes: "Gunnar Helliesen muses about the great firewall of Norway: "My country is going off the deep end. A Computer Crime Panel study group established by the Norwegian Government has issued a proposal to the Justice Department for a new law that would force all ISPs (Internet Service Providers) in Norway to actively censor the Internet. If this proposal were to become law, Norway would have stricter Internet censorship than China." more — http://archives.listbox.com/247/200702/0064.html"
