Sometimes it is the simplest of things, a client of mine was experiencing random server "crashes". Investigate, and find every single one was a controlled shutdown initiated by the admin user account. I said they should change the admin account ASAP. They said they had tried but other systems where the previous admin had used the admin account would break, and they didn't have a list. To what would be affected. I said and this is better than having someone randomly shutting down your operations, and potentially stealing anything they wanted, or leaving behind Trojans or back doors? 10 minutes later the admin account was disabled, and we just started trouble shifting and changing other system as they appeared broken, then the next user account was was found that started shutting stuff down. Any remote access to these systems? Well the previous IT providor used to use team viewer........ Changed that account and the attacks stopped. Sometimes it really is just the simple things.

There is a kid in the UK facing the same problem, and he didn't even take a dime of US money!

I've only seen one windows phone in the wild that someone actually spent their own money on. All the rest have been provided by work. Our current corporate cell plan gives us a choice off one of the crappiest androids from HTC or a slightly better species winmobile. For me though I'm using my iphone4 I bought a year and a half ago. Oh, and that is still going to be supported by ios5

Thank goodnes then for android. If you want the choice, buy a tab with a more configurable OS, just don't whine when the punters find it confusing and too hard to use. Nothing stoping Mozilla making a boot to gecko OS, or replacing the default browser in an android distro. Arm is awesome but I'm hanging out for the x86 tablets as they get cheaper so I can run a full Linux platform.

Ok, so what browsers do you use on iOS? Windows8 RT on ARM is equivalent to iOS. The iOS base is the Mach kernel, same as OS X, but the apps and services are not 100% identical between the intel/AMD and ARM OSs. Windows 8 for amd64 will still be able to run everything, but the tablets that can do this are far more expensive than the ARMs, mainly because of the battery, IO performance and SSDs required.

I was a myth fan, but then after setting one up I realized that I hardly ever watched broadcast tv anymore. I've now gone with a much simpler plex configuration. On my Mac I have plex server and eye tv. Anything I want to record I do through eye, which then transcodes and exports automatically, plex indexes it, and my 1TB media store, and the plugins for Vimeo, YouTube and iTunes etc. then I use plex frontend on an old 2008 mini on the 50" plasma tv, my iPhone, my iPad and my wife's android. I'll look at picking up a 7" android tablet for the kids to use. What myth really needed to keep up we're more frontend clients. Current plex server beta also supports DLNA, so as more profiles get developed, more screens will get supported. I've also got a PVR for one off recordings if I need it, but of course nothing recorded on it can be shared.

And the education stats quoted in the article, remember the "criminal" population is just a list of those who got caught. Maybe this just means those without higher education are simply more likely to get caught and prosecuted for their endevour. Ask Slashdot: Making a Tablet Run Only One Application? 260

An anonymous reader asks "I'm working for a medical centre who want to make a tablet with various videos and webpages about smoking cessation available in their waiting room. The tablet can't access the Internet because of security policies. I'm planning to use a local server with copies of the (Creative Commons) videos and pages accessed through local webpages using the tablet's browser. How can I make only the browser be available to the tablet users? Ideas? Suggestions?"
