To clarify - the "99-year sale" of public housing in Singapore is always built from scratch; the government does not buy existing residential buildings then convert them to public housing. It could be possible for the government to buy over buildings then tear them down, then build public housing on that piece of land, but never take over the existing building.
As a Singaporean, I'm surprised at the existence of secret police. There are definitely police cameras everywhere, but not police officers, in plain clothes or uniforms. If read the news, it takes a while for enforcement officers to arrive, and sometimes offenders do escape first.
I wonder how, a foreigner, is able to identify a secret police especially when their identities are supposed to be secret.
Criticism of the Singaporean government is extremely common here. Citizens complain about the government online all the time; opposition parties do that too. The government knows they will never stop criticism; they just want to stop the prominent critics from getting too much attention. To be honest, we don't need these critics to bring up critical discussions because we get information very easily, and we can discern what's government propaganda what's not.
Over here, we don't have anything close to "the Great Firewall" or "censorship" in China. I don't understand how you get this impression. We get all sorts of news and propaganda outside Singapore from the Internet; the only thing we are censored is porn, and some torrent sites, which can be easily circumvented by using Google's DNS servers.
