Comment Are AI chips really that complex... (Score 1) 65

Maybe I am missing something but compared to a GPU, AI chips seem much simpler:
- No unpredictable conditional memory access patterns. It's mostly matrix operations which are very linear and predictable
- No complex shaders. It's primary multiplication and addition
- Extremely small and simple fixed functionality - just tensor operations. GPUs have to deal with many things like anisotropic filtering, texturing, z-buffering, rasterization, tesselation, anti-aliasing...

Besides the usual players, there are multiple companies developing AI chips, much more numerous than GPU companies. Many startups, but also many big players that develop AI chips for internal use: Tesla, Google, Amazon, Apple... IMO the current NVidia domination is not going to last.

GPT-3 is a text generator - give it a few words and it will write an essay. DALL-E is an image generator. While both can be misused, they don't pose nearly as much danger as a chat bot like ChatGPT-4 which can manipulate humans into carrying out its commands or directly accessing the internet. Classifying each generative AI as high risk is stupid and will overload most AI startups with tons of unnecessary paperwork.

This should have happened long ago. Not because of a factory turmoil, but because a conflict with USA is inevitable and every company that keeps all it's eggs in one basket is going to suffer. I am not Apple user/fan, but I am quite sure this notion may change soon. With the switch to ARM, Apple is on a clear path to making your phone a personal Mac computer that you can bring anywhere and connect(wirelessly) to a screen/keyboard. The self driving cars is an important part of this strategy. There will be many bored people commuting in self-driving cars and they will want to work or enjoy entertainment while driven. Google will try to counter this by turning your Android phone into a Chromebook, but not many people will find this useful. Apple will use this advantage to gain a foothold in a new market.

The paper lists the probabilities of psychiatric illness after diagnosis for covid. It compares the results to conditions like influenza, respiratory infection, skin infection, fracture, etc.
First, psychiatric illness is defined as any of these: psychotic disorder, mood disorder and anxiety disorder. Mood and anxiety disorders are quite vague and can happen to many people when the circumstances are far from optimal.
The exact values for covid are:
- Psychotic disorder: 0.94%
- Mood disorder: 9.9%
- Anxiety disorder: 12.8 %

For influenza: 0.49%, 7.4% and 9.4%, for skin infection: 0.92%, 8.6% and 10%
So while covid is worse than any condition they compared it to, the results are not as extraordinary as the title claims.

The article says it has double the specific impulse of a chemical engine. There is no way this will reduce the travel time to 3 months (from between 6 to 9 with chemical rocket). And it will be beneficial mostly for small one-way spacecrafts that don't have to carry chemical engines once the booster stages are expended. For a rocket like SpaceX Starship which already has chemical engines that it needs for launch and landing - adding a nuclear engine will add more mass - for the engine itself, for structural support(bigger rocket), for the fuel tank (huge because the fuel is hydrogen which has very low density and is hard to contain), for the fuel itself and for the fuel required to bring the extra mass to orbit. Yes the fuel required may be less, but because of the increased mass the difference will be marginal.

Actually most europeans have evolved genes that let them digest milk in adulthood. This happened very quickly a few thousand years ago, so there must be a big evolutionary advantage to drinking milk.
