Comment STEM (Score 3, Interesting) 184

I've taught English/Literature to high schoolers for nearly 30 years. The push for STEM in the curriculum is killing Humanities. Art budgets: Slashed. English Textbook budget: Slashed. My school hasn't ordered new Textbooks for english classes in 23 years. We are to teach Informational Analysis, Media Awareness, We hand out pdfs of texts that we can find online. THe schools will subscribe to Kahn Academy for ACT/SAT prep because tests are important in order to prove the children learn. But the real learning, the real growth in who a child is as a person cannot be tested and proven. Johnny will feed a stray dog, help his elderly neighbor shovel the walk, or volunteer at a park district to teach 6 year olds how to play basketball. All of these traits are GOOD traits, but none of these can be tested and there is no way to show Growth of Learning of these traits. The school want to do well on the state tests. Parents want the students to succeed. The only measure of success in school are the Data driven tests. There is no humanity in education any more. As an example, When I try to teach any Shakespeare, or To Kill a Mockingbird, or Brave New World (BNW was a shit show last year), I am supposed to teach HOW Shakespeare made his work emotional, not that it is emotional and not how to connect to it. Emotional connections are not quantifiable on state tests. Only the ability to read for information and glean what is needed in order to make the future employers happy....

I was just getting ready to rant , but instead, I'm going to sit back and watch society fall apart. I've announced my retirement for the end of this school year. I'm too wore out from trying to fix things at the local level, and I am not rich enough, nor am I in bed with the right publishers in order to be heard at the state level.

Lets see, 7.7 Billion people on this planet.
63% of the population has internet access.
That's 4.8 Billion men, women, and children, old and young that have internet access.
With 137.2 Billion visits in 2020, that means Each person from 0 - 110 years old visited 29 times.
Sounds legit for a covid year.

Comment Netflix is done... (Score 3, Interesting) 91

Netflix has served its purpose. It showed the world that streaming movies was viable. The movie studios realized that Netflix was making bank off their stuff and started their own private streaming services... Now that everyone is streaming their own content, it's either go back to paying subscriptions for your media flavor at hundreds of dollars a month (If you want them all) OR go back to the pirate bay.

Comment Happened to me. (Score 4, Interesting) 82

This morning I noticed I'd received a text from a woman with whom I had a fling I had in the spring. We eventually parted ways and that was that. I never expected to hear from her again... Well, this morning I saw a text from her. I figured she was either drunk or wanting to reopen a friendship for the holidays. I wonder what she thought when she saw my reply. Actually, I'm sure she blocked me.

I wonder how many people got a text "from the grave."
