Submission + - "Open Source Bach" project completed; score and recording now online (opengoldbergvariations.org) 1

rDouglass writes: "MuseScore, the open source music notation editor, and pianist Kimiko Ishizaka have released a new recording and digital edition of Bach's Goldberg Variations. The works are released under the Creative Commons Zero license to promote the broadest possible free use of the works. The score underwent two rounds of public peer review, drawing on processes normally applied to open source software. Furthermore, the demands of Bach's notational style drove significant advancements in the MuseScore open source project. The recording was made on a Bösendorfer 290 Imperial piano in the Teldex Studio of Berlin. Anne-Marie Sylvestre, a Canadian record producer, was inspired by the project and volunteered her time to edit and produce the recording. The project was funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign that was featured on Slashdot in March 2011."

Jobs recently stepped down as Apple's CEO, and now Apple has announced that he has passed away.

Comment Desktops vs. laptops (Score 1) 168

Native apps and web apps are like desktops and laptops. Laptops are more convenient and portable, but are harder to upgrade and generally less powerful. Laptops have advantages, but they aren't going to replace desktops anytime soon. Instead they will coexist until technology advances enough that laptops can replace desktops. Web apps are more portable and convenient; but native apps are faster and offer greater flexibility. They will coexist until computers are fast enough to run web apps at native speeds. Then the only native apps will be the OS and browsers. That is still a long time off. So stop worrying about it.

Grammar nazis are to this community what excrements are to gold.

"Excrements" is not a word. I believe you're looking for "feces" or "excreta". Or, alternatively, "A grammar Nazi is to this community what a pile of excrement is to gold."

Wiktionary disagrees...it notes "excrements" as plural to "excrement". Also note..."excrement" can refer to any bodily waste product, so even if one considers "excrement" as a mass noun in most contexts, it still could make sense to say "excrements, like sweat, urine, or feces" (similar to fish vs. fishes as a plural).

A grammar Nazi is to this community what a pile of crap is to gold. There, I fixed it. :)
