Comment Re:Designed to fail? (Score 1) 116

Except that isn't even true. GM is trying really hard to make it look true, but it's not. The top of the line Silverado is High Country. Let's compare a couple of models...

2022 2WD Crew Cab Silverado 1500 Work Truck: $37,200
2022 2WD Crew Cab Silverado 1500 RST: $47,600
2022 2WD Crew Cab Silverado 1500 High Country: $56,800

It should be a bit more clear now that they are pitching their middle-of-the-road trim as their "fully loaded" EV trim. It costs $14,000 more than a Ford F150 Lightning Platinum. Note, that while Platinum is no longer the most expensive F150 trim, it's closer in Ford's line up than RST is in Chevrolet's line up.

The only way to explain this overly expensive Silverado 1500 EV is that they are not using the same tooling as their non-EV 1500's and as a result there are no economies of scale going on.

GM can get away with this for their Hummer EV as Hummer is a premium/luxury brand. On the other hand, Silverado is now the third from top selling pickup in the USA, and doesn't command the demand that is needed to charge $14k over the competition while delivering less trim perks in a first year model vehicle.

This vehicle is a hard pass by anyone who even halfway cares about their money... and I say this as a Chevy Silverado 1500 owner that would rather eat dirt than buy a Ford F150.

Then we both agree that the general population hold the position that this will inevitably go south. :)

The better idea is IPv6 and a firewall.

NAT was a short-term work around to a problem created by bringing massive-scale participation onto a network designed for (comparatively) small-scale use. We should be very clear here - NAT was not intended to be a security product, it was (and still is) a kludgy work around that breaks more than it fixes. IPv6 is a better solution all around.

Was this supposed to be a thought provoking question?

This is anecdotal, but in my experience customer service at Amazon has been far superior for lost packages/misrepresented items than eBay when something is Shipped and Sold By Amazon.com or Fulfilled By Amazon.

  • A) At Amazon, when the item in the package was not what was advertised, they have either refunded my money (without a product return required) and let me order it again, given me a prepaid label for return and cross shipped me a replacement, or offered me a discount on the item to make up for the difference.
  • B) On eBay, When the item in the package was not what was ordered (clearly used instead of new), the seller confirmed the deception and offered no solution, while ebay (and my bank) insisted I should return the item at my expense, and then they would refund my original purchase price.

One of those solutions is acceptable, the other costs me money for someone else's deliberate deception. It should be noted though, when an item is completely third party at Amazon (neither shipped nor sold by Amazon.com), all bets are off and you are about as likely to find help as at eBay.

Still - the more things change, the more they stay the same... and now the only time six digits isn't cool is when the four digit folks come out to play and remind us they're still here and haven't all left for reddit (yet).

This is a pretty well thought out post, and on the most part I would agree - to the extent that you are dealing with rational people.

I would point out though that it does fall apart completely once sociopaths come into the picture - and a single sociopath can lead and convince normally rational to do abnormal and entirely irrational things - which most definitely include doing violence where there is no chance of success, and where the price paid is superior to what is gained.

Food for thought.
