Submission + - The Ethics of Sex with Robots 1

Hugh Pickens writes writes: "The Sonoma State Star reports that philosophy professor John Sullins says that as engineers work to design visually pleasing and life-like mechanical robots that simulate emotions, the potential psychological outcomes of this form of advanced technology may pose a threat to the way society functions as a whole. "Humans have a tendency to anthropomorphize things in their environment, like naming their car, for instance. People have a compelling need to make connections with things in their lives," says Sullins adding that engineers have the ability to access human psychological weaknesses when they build a computer that takes the shape of a visually pleasing and attractive mate that can say emotionally moving things, like "I love you," during physically intimate moments. Author David Levy says that these types of robots will be able to end pedophilia and prostitution and that robot sex will become the only sexual outlet for a few sectors of the population: the misfits, the very shy, the sexually inadequate and uneducable but although Levy enlightens his readers with the benefits that sex robots can provide humans, Sullins still believes that they will ultimately cause social isolation.. "Plato argues that in life, humans should not just try to obtain sexual gratification, but they should try to attain the erotic," says Sullins adding that the concept of "the erotic," can be described as a loving and meaningful relationship that transports lovers to a philosophically higher place and helps them become better people."

Submission + - Child porn distributor used neighbors' open wifi (oregonlive.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Police in Oregon spent two years putting together a case against a child pornographer who used unsecured wifi connections from his neighbors to trade child pornography on peer-to-peer sites. The article notes advanced criminology efforts like scripting searches to run "round-the-clock" and a deputy sheriff who "parked outside homes with her laptop to confirm that the networks in her investigation were unsecured, which led investigators to believe someone with an antenna was disguising downloads through those wireless accounts." With this level of sleuthiness, we've got to be close to finding Bin Laden....

Submission + - See the "supermoon" tonight. (telegraph.co.uk)

scumfuker writes: "This weekend a new word rises over the horizon of the English language. The full Moon tonight has been designated a “supermoon” as it will be the nearest approach of the Moon to Earth for the past 18 years, bringing it some 30,000 miles closer than usual. If we have clear skies, this lunar event will be weighted with a special sense of expectation – perhaps, for some people, even dread."

I signed up for Hulu+ for a week and canceled due to the fact that 90% of my queue wasn't available to stream via my PS3. Not that it's at all difficult to plug a HDMI cable between my laptop and TV, but if I'm going to be forced to do it that way anyway, might as well just let Pirate Bay provide my commercial free viewing experience. I still have Netflix which is what I use for most of my viewing, but I refuse to pay to have artificial restrictions placed on how I can watch what I'm paying for.

As much as Sony is really starting to piss me off, I still do 90% of my gaming on the PS3. Reason, I refuse to give Microsoft money for Live, and the fact that I'm now on my 5th 360 due to their crappy hardware. Between blu-ray, netflix and gaming on the PS3 it easily sees the most use at my house. I swear Sony is doing everything in their power to make me jump ship though.

Their flying images demo just kept on rolling when I tried it with firefox 3.6 on my slackware linux box. I jacked the number of images up as high as it would go and it was still doing something like 50fps. So looks like firefox got their first.

I'm getting about 20-30fps in firefox 3.6 on a su2300 netbook. IE 8 gets about 1fps.

The Grown-Up Video Game 152

Phaethon360 writes "Now, more than ever, we're seeing many Mature ratings (M+, 17+, 18) being distributed by various national media regulators. But that isn't the only indicator for a game's intended audience. It doesn't take a thousand swear words, scantily clad women or gratuitous violence to differentiate a ten-year-old's game from a twenty-year-old's. The spectrum of human emotions encompasses a wider palette than just revenge, fear, and loss, but the games that shy away from these are frequently mistaken as being for a younger audience. From the article: 'The human experience is one that is made up of great hardship, pain, loss, death, and a multitude of experiences seemingly designed to destroy a person. However, that same experience is also filled with joy, love, laughter, family and friends. ... These so-called “grown-up” games need not be relegated to the category of niche gaming. In fact, at times we find that these video games are capable of reaching mass popularity among the gaming community. It is here that we find one of our generation’s outlets for the expression of conflict.'"

It's been a few years since I used T-Mobile. Had cell/text package. Called them up told them I didn't want text anymore and to shut it off. So what do they do, they start charging me for every text message sent TO me. Called them up again and asked why I was being charged for wrong # text messages that kept getting sent to me and they said they couldn't turn off the text messages and that I'd have to keep paying for them. I wonder how much they'll be gouging for these movies. I notice the price of normal Blu-ray disks still hasn't come down.

They have. I've been seeing a lot of blu-ray/DVD/Digital copy sets being sold for $20.00. Just got the new Harry Potter and Pixar's UP like that. If they keep offering deals like this or even just the Blu Ray for $20 I might cancel my Netflix and start buying movies again.
