Comment Why don't big companies backup anymore? (Score 1) 81

It used to be a thing, hard drives were unreliable and we had to back up everything. Not only that, additional backups were made so that it could be taken off site incase of fire or theft. Ransomware is much like a drive failure, data is corrupted. Just reformat the drives and restore backups.

Consumer Reports has fallen quite a bit.

If people are actually doing this they are intentionally violating the owner's privacy and property. This isn't much different than unscrewing two screws at the bottom of a "secure" Ring doorbell and pressing the bright orange pair button in there. Sure it's a couple extra steps but there is nothing special in the way of doing exactly that. Regardless, to take control of the "unsecured" doorbell camera requires stepping onto the owner's property (with video evidence of you doing it btw) with intention of violating the owner's property. We already have laws against this.

Most cars have an antenna bump on the top that isolates it from the rest of the car, it wouldn't be too difficult to stuff the vulnerable am radio components inside this bump and send a digital signal to the receiver head unit inside the car. Sure there will be an engineering cost developing this but given enough scale it probably wouldn't cost much more that $15 per vehicle.

I bought a Galaxy Z Fold 4, which was great initially. However, a major issue surfaced with the screen protector. When I opened the phone, the screen protector peeled off along the crease, instantly killing the pixels in that area. This left me with a display marred by a 1/2" black line down the center. Samsung declined to cover this under warranty, rendering my device a partially-functional unit with a compromised display.

I tried T-Mobile 5G and got 900m/sec as the tower was line of site from my apartment. It was $50/mo uncapped compared to Cox which was $129/mo for the same speed and capped at 1.2TB transfer per month.

Everything you said is true but not everyone needs those features. If you use the internet for IoT, streaming, and web it is a great value. Heck the latency wasn't that bad for gaming, but certainly not optimal.

The only reason I went back to Cox was they kept calling me and eventually offered the same price as long as I lived at that address and lifted the cap. I'm sure AT&T Fiber and Google Fiber being built-out in my neighborhood helped a little getting this deal.
