Submission + - Would Finding E.T. Change Our View of God? (discovery.com)

astroengine writes: "At the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Washington D.C. last week, some of the discussions got a little... deep. One such debate between Seth Shostak (SETI Institute) and Howard Smith (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics) centered around the possibility for life beyond Earth. Shostak took the view that alien life was inevitable, while Smith was pessimistic of finding E.T. at all. This debate spawned a discussion about what this means for the world's religions and how they might react to realizing "God" decided to create life (or not) elsewhere in the cosmos."

I'm in NY. They been talking about "Tech Valley" BS for years. AMD has been taking years to build a plant up here, and even when it is ready to open, all the upper tier tech positions are being filled by out of state workers.

The majority of the good jobs are going to local union construction, electricians and plumbers who will be working on the different sites for years, not the local techies.

3rd-Grader Busted For Jolly Rancher Possession 804

theodp writes "A third-grader in a small Texas school district received a week's detention for merely possessing a Jolly Rancher. Leighann Adair, 10, was eating lunch Monday when a teacher confiscated the candy. Her parents said she was in tears when she arrived home later that afternoon and handed them the detention notice. But school officials are defending the sentence, saying the school was abiding by a state guideline that banned 'minimal nutrition' foods. 'Whether or not I agree with the guidelines, we have to follow the rules,' said school superintendent Jack Ellis."

They found a loop hole to nail Rob Black.

Once the videos from his site were sold, they nailed him for using the US postal service to spread obscenity or some other bogus outdated law like that.

The ruling in this case is totally bogus but if you ever saw any of Max's work, it's kind of hard to feel sympathy for the guy.
