Submission + - Cracks could cause key ice shelf holding back "Doomsday Glacier" to collapse (confex.com)

ITShaman writes: Scientists have detected new cracks in the key ice shelf that buttresses Antarctica's Thwaites Glacier, indicating that the ice shelf could break apart within the next five years. The destruction of the ice shelf could accelerate the movement of inland ice into the sea, eventually causing sea levels to rise by several feet and endangering coastal communities worldwide, per the Washington Post. Amen brother. My Samsung TV has great hardware, but the TVOS and the apps suck rocks, like so much so I have to hard reset (pull the plug) once a week so Netflix and Weather App and Amazon and Crave work. I was so peeved I went and bought a Roku, and have not regretted that. Samsung even forces ads on my TV home page now I can't get rid of (and I've tried blocking the samsung URLs from my firewall). My Galaxy S8 is constantly resetting notifications and screen display settings without my knowledge or consent. The microphone sucks, and the list goes on. Never Buying Samsung Again

Much agree with Kenwd0elq, My Samsung 65" TV has been a disappointment since I got it in 2015. Power on the remote stopped working after 2 years. The TV OS sucks rocks, and half my apps need to be reinstalled every few months, and Netflix freezes and requires a TV Hard Reboot once a month, and now there's been ads since the January update, which I can't get rid of. I finally got a Roku, much better aps. Not much better luck with my Samsung S8. Notifications keep resetting to silent without me doing anything, and I've had to factory reset the damn thing three times in two years. Never. Buying. Samsung. AGAIN.

In the early days (80's and 90's) Software companies sucked you in with low initial licence charge, but nailed you on the annual maintenance (CA and many others were guilty of this). Business customers paid even less up front (Volume Pricing discounts normally in the 25-45% range from list), but still got nailed on the maintenance. Now it's the SaaS per seat model of gouging. No more maintenance to worry about Sir, just remember to pay us your monthly subscription fee .

Same issue in Quebec (Canada). I didn't have a choice in my home. Either I let them install the e-meter, or I would have to pay Hydro Quebec $200/yr to keep my old, functioning very nicely for 15 years, mechanical meter.

I check my bill every month to see if there's some differences from the previous month or same period the year earlier, but so far, knock on wood, nothing amiss so far.

I am, however, ticked at the craziness of it all. These eMeters are more expensive per unit that the sound mechanical ones, they haven't been around long enough to give anyone a good idea of mean time to failure (MTTF). I've worked with embedded (now called IoT) devices for 20+ years, and no electronic device I've ever heard of has even 1/2 the MMTF of it mechanical device it's supposed to replace.

Not only that, but it contributes to additional wireless radiation and congestion on the wireless frequencies it uses to bunny hop to the closest meter or concentration point.

I can ramble on, but this is just another reason to hate these things.
